We did the Glacier dog sledding helicopter tour experience and it had all the components as advertised, but we felt the experience was pricey for what it was. There was a helicopter ride, but it was very short (5 min to the glacier, then on the way back, they took us on a slight detour to see more of the mountain, 10 min). We didn’t get much of a tour on the helicopter.
For the dogsledding part, the sleds are arranged 3 seats per sled and with upright seats, and a staff that will control the sled and dogs from behind. We booked as a couple and had a solo traveler join us who sat in the front the of the sled, so note to people booking as 2 that you may be joined by a stranger on the sled. The sledding itself was a short course around the glacier - we could see the whole course from where we landed. My main complaint is that we stopped every 5 minutes to pause, when it didn’t seem like we had to. The staff kept saying the dogs have a lot more energy to keep going. During the breaks, we would play with the dogs for 10 minutes or so to pass the time.
The dogs were very cute and friendly, and I genuinely enjoyed playing with them. It was also cool to be on a glacier. However, for the hefty price tag of $600 per person, we expected more time on the helicopter and actually dog sledding. That aside, staff was friendly and...
Read moreI did the glacier landing and dog sled ride out of Seward on 29 June 2024 What a fantastic experience - from the online check in (super easy) to the retun to base the whole experience could not have been better. The ground staff at the airport were so helpful providing overshoes, advising on what clothes to wear on the glacier and keeping extra back packs in the office. And of course I was greeted by the friendly office dog. Safety information and instructions made you feel this was a professional outfit. Our helicopter pilot (from Switzerland) was friendly and informative, pointing out general landmarks and interesting features such as pink glacial algae. Plus he did some interesting side turns to add a little spice to the flight :-) And then came the real experial - well the dogs were so excited their greeting out-yelped the friendliness of the staff on the glacier. Salsa and Granger are true stars and my absolute faves. If they have a following I am a fan. Xela (not sure of the spelling) was an excellent mushing teacher - Thanks for all the encouragement and for all the interesting facts I learned about the dogs, how sleds work and about the Ididotrod race. I will definitely repeat this experience if I every return. A true bucket...
Read moreTurning Heads Kennel was absolutely fantastic! Seeing sled dogs in action was a bucket list item for my family and it did not disappoint. The staff were amazing, friendly and knowledgeable. They picked us up from the cruise port and dropped us back off. This was a complimentary service, which we greatly appreciated. Everyone we encountered (including the dogs!) seemed to be passionate about what they were doing from the musher who accompanied us on the sled to the people handling the dogs in the kennel to the staff member at the end of the tour who gave us a demonstration about what it was like to be a musher (he was in the junior Iditarod and his demonstration and knowledge were incredible). We got to interact with and pet the dogs including a litter of puppies. All the dogs had their own personalities and were so cute and full of energy. You could see they were well cared for. We went in the summer and so our sled ride was through the forest, which turned out to be really cool! We loved this tour and would highly recommend...
