Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary — Attraction in Alpena

This Island Park and Wildlife was an easy hour walk with only two sets of stairs along the way. The flower gardens at the entrance is a great photo opportunity. The hand hewned covered bridge was built with Lots of trails that lead to the island's edges and interior. A family of swans paddled around. During the summer season one could rent kayaks but they were closed for the season. Lots of interesting plants too...

This is a fantastic place to spend the afternoon. The trails are amazing. Some paved and some dirt, but all are well maintained. The bridge provides a wonderful viewing spot for all of the wading birds and other water creatures. Nice and peaceful with plenty of parking. Beautiful area. Some walk-only trails all around the island plus lookouts here and there. A paved path goes up to the main lookout for stroller or wheelchair access. Many enjoy the river for fishing or kayaking/canoeing in the summer. It is a beautiful spot year round and many local families and parties frequent the new picturesque bridge for a photo...
