Alpena Fairground camp sites are conveniently located right off Route 23 within minutes of local attractions and historic sites. The RV / trailer sites were spacious enough with water views of the Alpena wildlife sanctuary and Thunder Bay River. The sunset views are lovely. We launched our kayaks right from our site and paddled around the sanctuary. Be aware, you cannot access Thunder Bay and Lake Huron from here. Access is blocked off at 9th street dam. If you want to head into Thunder Bay it’s best to just drive down and launch in at marina. And if you head down River you will have to paddle upstream to get back, not fun in high winds. Camping is quiet, only a few other campers there. Be mindful the fairgrounds hosts events during the year. The circus stopped to perform during our three days there but we didn’t hear a sound or notice anyone around. The restrooms and showers were clean enough, located near fairground entrance. Holly the caretaker was courteous to answer my questions over the phone before arrival and during check in. Her home office is located near entrance, it’s a small rancher house. Water and dump available as well near entrance. Overall a nice quiet stay. The should invest in...
Read moreThis is not a campground This is a place for long term homeless residents, as well as a random dog shelter. How they are even able to market this as a campground is beyond me. The seagulls are loud and relentless, there’s a concrete factory right by where you’ll sleep and it’s VERY loud in the morning! There’s also a train that comes through at 4 in the morning and apparently it has to hold its whistle down for 6 to 7 minutes because the train crosses many roads in the area and there are no lights warning cars that a train is coming. I wish I could give this place negative amounts of stars - We stayed for one night and packed up first thing in the morning and booked at the Ramada. I called the main office to let them know if our complaints and ask for a refund and she told me they could “credit us for a future stay” I’m trying to figure out how she thought that would help considering we didn’t want to be there SO badly, we turned our whole weekend up side down only to NOT stay there Stupid Anyway- do not waste your...
Read moreFirst, it's a field in the middle of town. Its loud and bright there's a redi-mix cement factory right across the street that runs til after 8 pm at night. There is wasps all over the campground you can't even sit at your picnic tables. And skunks, even when there is no garbage or food present. The showers have black mold there is even wet mold on the outside building walls easily seen. The bathrooms frequently are dirty and out of toilet paper.even tho the camp host holly lives about 50 feet from the building and doesn't clean it. Camp host holly also closed all the bathrooms by the people camping only keeping the furtherest bathroom open, a long walk, all across the grounds over by where she lives not by the campers. If th campground wasn't bad enough the camp host made it all worse. She was rude and condescending as well as her husband. I watched holly pick on homeless people in the park that are paid as well.she picked on them frequently they are just trying to live. I wouldn't recommend anyone waste their...
