Read moreAs a ROUTE 66 fan this is an obligatory stop on the "Mother Road". It has an astounding history and a is a testament to the fortitude and intentions of the local historians and preservationists. The displays, although rustically displayed, are what makes American history so interesting. The local volunteers are a font of knowledge and their pride of "ownership" is highly commendable. Their friendliness is something most of us do not experience in our urban environments. So when you are here.... SOAK IT UP!!!!!! TAKE YOUR TIME !!!! LOOK!!! READ!!!! ASK QUESTIONS!!! And be sure to EXPLORE the second floor dome of the barn to be astonished that most of the this recent restoration was aided by machines whereas the original builders had only their own power and rudimentary technology. Be overwhelmed and humbled. Be thankful and indebted to you forefathers...and mothers!!!! We are what we are because of them so let's not let them down....... OH YES......even though this attraction is "free".....PLEASE make certain to MAKE A DONATION when you arrive !!!
Not just a photo from the roadside..... well that’s what I thought it was going to be, which would have been fine. But this was a real treat. We had a personal presentation from Mr Sam aged 92 who was one of the restorers a real character, quite mesmerising. The bottom half has super displays on the history and restoration. The Wow factor was going upstairs to the first floor. Incredible jobs guys. Well done. No entry charge so we bunged in the voluntary donations box. A real unexpected gem so don’t drive by and just take a picture.
This is a very unique barn that has been lovingly restored. It's amazing to look at the photos inside of how bad shape it was in when they started to restore it. There are some good exhibits about the barn downstairs, but the real gem is upstairs. The underside of the roof, when viewed from inside on the second floor, looks like a huge upturned...
Read moreAmerica is loaded with tourist attractions, some of which stand out in your memory due to their immense size, natural beauty, etc. Others grab your attention because they offer something you don’t normally see and the Round Barn is one of them.
Situated on historic Route 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma, the Round Barn is an unusual piece of architecture. It is one of the few barns anywhere that is round in shape rather than square, rectangular, hexagonal, or some other polygon shape. I had never seen a barn that was round and its uniqueness was reason enough to stop and take a look.
Walking inside of the Round Barn guests will find a museum of sorts and a gift shop. I recommend learning more about the inspiration behind the construction of this barn, and you can do this right here on the main level. A souvenir gift is a good way to conclude your visit.
The Round Barn does have an upper level, but I walked up here and discovered that it is empty. I inquired and learned that it is rented out to people/groups for private parties and events. Some people walk up to this level so they can take pictures from the windows, but other than that, there is really nothing up here to speak of.
Going to the outside of the Round Barn, you will find a restroom, some antique farm equipment, and a parking lot in the back. Admission to this attraction is free and it takes an hour or less to visit. It’s not anything super- amazing, no. But the Round Barn is an attraction like few others and this is reason enough to add this to your vacation itinerary the next time you’re road tripping...
