CommonGrounds Golf Course is conveniently located east of downtown Denver. The course is quite flat and easily walkable plus they have a great caddie program. Caddies work on a no charge, tips only basis.
I was told the course opened in 2002 and has hosted many tourney events. Last year they suffered a flood that caused closures for some time but it was it super shape when I played it with my nephew late July this year.
The course was built on an old Air Force base for the benefit of the Colorado Golf Association (CGA) and the Colorado Women's Golf Association (CWGA). Favorable rates are given for members of the State Golf Associations.
Tom Doak used his "width that matters" concept in designing the layout with bunkers, marshland, water, etc. in strategic positions. The fairways are generally wide and the adjacent roughs are soft and thick but the deep roughs are very penal. The course has 4 tee boxes (black, gold, white and red). But it offers two more good options: gold/white and white/red. My nephew and I played the Gold/White at 6,497 69.3/120 and that was perfect for us as we'd been beaten up playing blue tees in the mountain courses for the previous 3 days.
We played on a Tues AM after suffering some tough Denver morning rush hour traffic so we had no time to warm up. We started on the 10th hole following a relatively slow ladies league. But when we made the turn to the front side play was nice and fast.
The greens were in excellent shape. The fairways were very wet and lush due to heavy recent rains. The course has a nice mix of old cottonwood trees, pines, marshlands and some neat combinations of green-fairway-tee box all neatly closely cropped.
On the par 5 3rd hole stay to the right side of the fairway to avoid a mean left center bunker. Then use the backstop behind and left of that green to hold your approach shot. The par 3 14th hole is a tough one. Hit the club that gives you the confidence for a straight shot between the mounds protecting this little rascal. Check out the number of holes that are 400+ yd par 4s before you select your tee boxes for the round. Although we were near downtown Denver the course was very peaceful. We even had 7 deer run past us on the 8th tee box.
CommonGrounds obviously does a great job with their teaching programs. I didn't get a chance to try it but I saw their Par 3 course south of their practice field. This course is only $10- for adults and free for juniors.
I'll give that a try before my 18 next time...
Read moreI absolutely loved this track. Best course in Denver for the money you spend. Very walkable and it was in great condition when I played it. Greens were medium in terms of speed but very smooth. Fairways were great and the rough was thick. This is my favorite flat course I have played. Tom Doak is an amazing golf course architect, and this is by far the cheapest course designed by him you'll find. Greens are wild. So many reveals when you get closer or go over a ridge.
Number 3 is a great par 5 with a center line bunker that messes with your layup choices, and the punchbowl green is sweet. A couple of people I played with pulled their shots left and had some really tough chips coming in. Number 10 is a short par 4 that I would play differently next time. Very wide open on the left, more that you would think. Better angle into that green where trees guards the right side. I would not hit driver and go left, leaving a flip wedge in. Hole 11, a par 5, is my favorite. Didn't hit it well off the tee and ended up in that big cross bunker. Big mound short right of the green both kicks golf balls towards the middle of the green or propels balls over the right side of the green. Water is all up the left side is the hole. Great design. Absolute brutes from hole 14 to the finish. Fun track I'll try and play every time I'm in town. Very hard to get tee times, even during the week as a single.
Driving range is huge and off grass. I think I saw three chipping greens and a big putting green. Plenty of areas to practice. Great course for...
Read moreThis place is DISGUSTINGLY overpriced. It's insane. $100 to ride 18 IN DECEMBER! Sadly, I was informed over the phone it was $77 and even asked with a cart, and was told yes. Only to Uber over here and find out it was $100. They don't discount for winter?!
This place isn't even well maintained for the money, especially considering it's located next to the ghetto. Straight up.
Last year I played here and some Somalian (I assume) was stumbling through the 9th hole with a gunshot wound to his mid section, at NOON on a Thursday! STAY AWAY from this overpriced, underwhelming, mediocre course. You can have so much more challenging, fun, scenic, playable courses for just over half, and I'm talking public courses. This place is basically on par with meadow hills but charges fossil trace money.
They are arrogant and because it's "CGA" course, charge about 40% premium for sub standard conditions (given the price range)
IF you are visiting, avoid this place at all costs. You can play so many more interesting, scenic, fun, and challenging courses for less. I'd rather play Spring Hill than this rip off, garbage course. At least there you get matched up with fun people who don't take themselves so serious. Everyone I've ever played with here (my 5th and last time) were total arrogant D bags.
This is the place where the upper middle class lie to themselves that they aren't overpaying, while pretending they are in a class above others because it's...
