On a cool, cloudy non-beach morning in August we did a short loop around Eagle Pond (the Main Trail) with our terrier mix, 6 yr old, and 3 year old. We brought our beach wagon which was easy enough to pull (a few roots made for a bumpy ride here & there) for our 3 yr old to hop in and out of, per his whim! It is forested so shady the whole way. It was a nice walk, just note it is more of a forest route with one lookout point for the pond.

Great trails for hiking and walking the dog! I've rescued a lot of history from the dirt in these woods as well!
