I've visited numerous public libraries across the Bay Area, and I must say that my recent experience at the Northern Branch of the Berkeley Public Library left me deeply dissatisfied. Compared to other libraries in the region, it falls significantly short in size and amenities, making it ill-suited to serve its community effectively.

First and foremost, the library's physical space is severely limited, with only one story and covering just over 700 square feet. Frankly, it feels like a wasted opportunity, and the location might be better suited for purposes like a church, theater, or even a museum.

In my opinion, the solution to this problem is clear: Berkeley should invest in constructing a new, modern library facility on one of three suburban blocks surrounding the North Berkeley BART station. These blocks offer the ideal space for a larger and more functional library, as well as the potential for businesses that complement both the library and the BART station.

The three blocks I have in mind are:

The first block bounded by Acton St. (east), Virginia St. (north), Franklin St. (west), and Francisco St. (south).

The second block with Acton St. (east), Francisco St. (north), Franklin St. (west), and Delaware St. (south).

The third block with Virginia St. (north), Eola St. (east), Francisco St. (south), and Sacramento St. (west).

A new library on one of these blocks could be seven or nine stories tall, allowing for additional space and amenities. I suggest dedicating one floor to an indoor coffee shop and another to an indoor restaurant. These additions would not only generate extra income for the library but also better serve the local community's needs.

Furthermore, I recommend making the library environmentally sustainable by incorporating solar panels on the roof. This move would promote the use of renewable energy and set an example for surrounding suburban households.

Overall, while I appreciate the efforts of the Northern Branch of the Berkeley Public Library, I believe it's time to invest in a more spacious and modern facility that truly meets the needs of the...

This library is perfect for little ones and has a mind-blowing amount of community activities ranging from sewing classes to cooking! The right side is your more traditional space, whereas the left is set up for children. Picture books abound! There’s a teen area, also.

The architecture is beautiful as it’s a historic building that’s still serving the community. Everyone is always incredibly helpful and sweet. My 4 year old loves returning books and checking them out himself.

Don’t mind the odd essay someone else wrote with the help of chat gpt about how to improve this already perfect branch of the library. They would probably like the main branch more since it’s much larger.

Not every branch needs to be huge...

This library is perfect for me. It’s small, but it’s well-stocked and well-staffed. It’s a great place to study, and there are almost always available seats near outlets. They have a wealth of community activities of all kinds ranging from dance classes to gardening workshops to chess tournaments to coding workshops. They have a great selection of books as well! Not as big a collection as a bigger library might have, but what they lack in size they make up for in heart. Also inter-library loans make that a non-issue. There are always children and teens in their respective sections, which I’m happy to see because I spent a lot of time in public libraries when...
