Great hike. 7-8 effort. Worth the view. Get there early. Parking fills up quickly. I did not take my own advice. Got there on a Saturday at 9:15 am and there was 1 parking space left. Luckily I know how to back in and parallel park.
It was a great day for a hike. It was great to see many people outdoors. However I also saw a lot of people struggling on the trail. So I thought I will share some basic tips. Tip 1 - ditch the metal water bottles. Saw alot of people carrying it on their hand. They are heavy and you have no place to put them when you get tired. Tip 2 - ditch the school backpack. You don't need much for this hike. It adds weight. Keep it light. Tip 3 - Do carry a plastic water bottle. It is lighter than a metal water bottle. The hike is 2.5 miles to Ravens Rock and parts of it can be strenuous. You will need water. Tip 4- Use a waist pack with a water bottle holder. It makes it easier to carry your wallet, keys, snacks, and water in 1 pack. Tip 5 - ditch the heavy jackets. Too heavy to carry once you get hot and you have to take it off. Wear layered clothing instead.
These tips will help make the hike easier and more enjoyable.
Here's a picture of my waist pack and what I carry.

Read moreIt was my first time hiking on this trail and it was an awesome experience. It’s a moderate and rocky trail with multiple elevations. It’s about 5.8 miles and it took my date and I about 3 hours and 40 minutes with taking some photos at the beautiful Shenandoah Valley overlook. I would recommend you go early on a weekend on a nice day like arrive before 7AM EST for a good parking spot. We got there around 8:08AM EST and we had to park across the highway which has a bigger parking lot. Anyway, the trail got busy coming down because it was around 10AM on weekend. Tons of families, dog walkers and solo hikers. I would personally recommend ankle support hiking boots but that’s my personal preference for the often rocky and slippery terrain. It’s a great cardio workout! I would...
Read moreA great hike for this area (would have to go a couple of hours away for anything much better) -- relatively challenging, a fun trail, and a bit of a view at the end. Also has the option of going much further on the AT, of course. As everyone has said, it's very rocky, so wearing good shoes is important, and there's plenty of up and down. That said, there's nothing technical (in terms of climbing, scrambling, etc. -- in terms of running, this counts as technical), and the change in elevation isn't that much (depending on what you are used to). I would highly recommend getting there very early, not just to grab a parking spot but also to have a better chance of seeing wildlife and experiencing some seclusion on the trail, though everyone I've bumped into has...
