I visited the Sakakawea Statue while walking the Grounds of the North Dakota State Capitol. I was a great Photo Stop and is also near the North Dakota Heritage Center. Visitor Parking is available in the near by lots just pay attention to the signs. While you are at the Sakakawea Statue be sure to visit the Buffalo Statue that is located in front of the Heritage Center.

The Sakakawea statue is located in between the state capital and the North Dakota Heritage Center in downtown Bismarck. We visited the statue in between our visits at the NDHC and the state capital. Be sure to read the interpretive sign regarding the statue. We were touched that the artists modeled the statue after one of Sakakawea's descendents.

Awesome place. It's all free but they will accept donations. Plan on taking about 3-6 hours to see everything. They have so many neat things to see. It was way better than I had expected. Very educational and a great experience. I would recommend anyone passing through to stop in and check it out!

Part of my interest in this amazing woman is her name. Constantly spelled and pronounced differently. Not only her name but the date and location of her death. I often wonder what it would have been like to be in her shoes. This is a gorgeous statue of her and her young son. Nearby this statue is an amazing...
