I went to Lake Compounce's Phantom Fall Fest on September 28 with a friend and my service dog in training as a training excursion for her.
The staff was amazing, starting literally at the parking booth where they saw my dog, complimented her, and then directed us to accessible parking when I mentioned she was a service dog in training, even though I clarified no mobility issues and no placard/need for one, as they thought we'd be safer not having to go through the whole massive lot with her. They were having temporary issues with the lights in the lot (came on again a minute later!) and had ample staff directing traffic.
At the security point, friendly employees asked me if she was a service dog, exactly as they should have, which I loved! They were polite and appropriate in every way, and I was so glad they asked the legally allowed questions, as we'd run into dogs at an event earlier in the weekend who were clearly labeled as pets, not allowed, and when nobody asked me anything, I realized they didn't care. Lake Compounce does it right.
I was given options to go through an easier ticket entrance and then allowed to use the normal toll gate style one when I asked to as a training thing, another great moment of accessible options but friendly treatment of me as a regular person who happens to have a disability aide. They also have a dedicated area that's quieter and has seating for those who need to decompress; we did not end up needing that, but I love the thoughtful inclusion.
The staff members with heavy costumes and makeup were fantastic. They gave us a little space, but when I asked if I could approach and work with my dog on seeing them and their props and the noise makers, every individual said yes, did big movements and noises when I asked like normal, and also told us their jokes or physical comedy or scare things-- I got to be a normal person too, as well as being allowed to train my service dog.
The park is remarkably clean. They are clearly well-staffed for fall fest, as we saw many busy people picking up trash and discarded food and such, and the result was a shockingly tidy environment even when we left half an hour before closing.
There is an option to buy a necklace for $5 that signals everyone not to approach and scare you, which we didn't use, but felt was a great option. Many families with small children had them.
The environment is loud and busy, but not unmanageable, and the music is at a surprisingly reasonable level for a massive outdoor park creating an ambiance.
I cannot speak highly enough about the staff at Lake Compounce handling a customer with a service animal. They could have come straight out of an instructional video on the subject. When I passed my thanks on to someone there (a security officer, the first staff member i saw who wasn't actively busy), he was grateful, but also still checked that the folks handling the screening at the entrance had actually been appropriate even though I was happy. It was impressive to see how seriously they take it all -- i was giving a compliment and he still politely asked me what questions they'd asked because he wanted to be sure it was appropriate by their standards (it was, of course!).
Very, very impressed. Grab tickets on sale! It was honestly a fun night for two adults, even though we'd gone to do some training for the dog -- we both greatly enjoyed ourselves and though it was a fun atmosphere, even without going on rides or anything like that.
