Surfside Playhouse — Attraction in Cocoa Beach

In a complete turnaround from “Rent” which we left at intermission because we didn’t give a hoot about any characters in the story, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” presented every individual with a unique and identifiable personality, and within a very short period of time. This play at Surfside was fantastic in all respects, and you wouldn’t guess it is a local theater except that the stage is not as glorious as Riverside’s. Didn’t need to be. We have been to several productions at Riverside in Vero Beach and I would rather go to Surfside. My husband and I attended the Reader’s Theater “From the Script to the Stand” on March 9th. Friends had filled us in on what to expect but we weren’t prepared for how awesome this experience would be. The simplicity of the actors, all dressed in black, standing behind music stands with no other distractions made it easy for the audience to become submerged in the story line. Some of the scripts had us concentrating on the subtle meanings of the story while others broke our hearts. The discussion after each act included the audience, which was a unique experience for us. After a 50+ year professional career in entertainment, I was looking for a creative endeavor where I could share my many years theatrical experience locally here in Brevard. When I discovered this gem called "Surfside Playhouse", I knew this was a place I wanted to be a part of.

I am the current costume designer for the playhouse. What drew me to this theatre was its heart and its soul. It is a REAL community effort, a theatre where the community not only has the opportunity to be an audience member, but also has the opportunity to be onstage. So few community theaters throw their arms open to everyone, but Surfside does.
