One of the hidden beauties in Colorado Springs, most locals do not even know it's around. I met the artist when i was a child, he could be found building these artist kinetic sculptures in his garage, happy to shake hands with admirers. Starr served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He married a German immigrant named Hedwig Roelen in 1942, who was a nurse at Glockner Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. In 1948, they purchased this property of their future home in Cheyenne Canyon, where Starr designed and built his house and art studio. I remember growing up stopping by every once in a while to see his new creations or how much further he had gotten on a sculpture. They use to have music they moved to. Some taking up to 3 years to build, Pure genius. Unfortunately when he committed suicide, he was working on his "peace on earth" sculpture but did not finish it. While alive he tried to give his work to the city, they declined and did not want it sadly until after his death. Now a piece is also located in downtown. He remains one of the most amazing architects in the country in my eyes. Fabulous. Visit and donate to help keep this amazing, spectacular spot cared for as it is...
Read moreYou see huge sculptures erected inside a gated private property and all you could do is wish that you could come nearer and inspect them up close. The Starr Kempf Sculpture Garden is located in Colorado Springs, in a residential area that is quite hard to find without a GPS. With the winding and hilly terrain that lead to the garden, the location is very easy to miss. However, when you find it, you will be in awe of the creator Mr. Kempf, his talent, and his creativity.
As I said in the beginning, the only disappointment is that the Sculpture Garden is enclosed in the front yard of a residence and inaccessible to the public. The only way to view the creations is from the road. And if you happen to arrive at a time when other curious onlookers are there, then parking along the narrow road could be an issue.
Is Starr Kempf Sculpture Garden worth the drive? If you are heading to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or even to the Garden of the Gods, then the garden is...
