Trail Series, Part 20 In an effort to explore as many trails in Colorado as possible, our next stop was “Stratton Open Space Park” located in Colorado Springs.

Their multitude of trails welcome hikers, runners, mountain bikers, leased dogs, and equestrians. Although access isn’t provided to the “Gold Camp Reservoir,” your dog is welcome to enjoy a refreshing dip in the waters of the “Mesa Reservoir” (fishing and human swimming is prohibited).

There are numerous great views of the surrounding mountains, the valley below, and the iconic Broadmoor Hotel, so be prepared to snap a few pics.

Convenient parking is provided and all hiking and running abilities are able to enjoy these trails (including those with strollers/baby joggers when accessing the wide and well maintained fire access road).

This trail is easily accessible from The Springs and offers something for nearly everyone.

And that’s…Henry’s...

I LOVE Stratton and Captain Jacks! The only complaint is that the people can be very obstinate about leash laws. DOGS ARE REQUIRED TO BE ON A LEASH. I've seen park rangers ticket people for this before, and, as a mountain biker, it is very frustrating to have people completely disregard everyone else and allow their dogs to run loose and get in the way. Dangerous for the dog and dangerous for the rider. People are people, though, and there will always be those who insist that they are above the law.

Also, scoops your dog poops!! It's not your backyard!

That all said, this is a wonderful area for locals or tourists and is a fantastic place to ride.

If you are not a cyclist, I would recommend staying off of the Chutes. There are alternate routes up to Gold Camp that are...

Lots of trails lots of open space and a couple of reservoirs on the top of the hill. I need dog can swim in the big reservoir . It doesn't say that but the sign says no human swimming. Wildlife all over the place and you can walk up the road or a couple paths. Go to 21st ter, Cheyenne Road or boulevard. Turn on continue straight on Cheyenne Road did your 40 years you think I would know this throwing two roads coming into the canyon the main road and the other Road andamiro de turn on is the road closest to the North. Four people are new here face the mountains North is right or you can parking at the end of the road that borders Cheyenne mountain high to the South.when you go in the canyon Road about a quarter-mile to the right turn on Ridgeway and will be parking...

One of my favorite places to hike and bike! Hiking up takes you to a water reservoir that is a good relaxing spot. There is also a great view of the city and Broadmoor from there. Biking is even better than hiking here, in my opinion! There are multiple trails here for biking. Upper or Lower Chutes are probably the funnest though. They are connected and make for a really fun and fast downhill with tall berms and medium-rough terrain. There tends to be a lot of gravel on that trail though. Be careful and wear your helmet! I recommend kneepads just in case. I would rather be able to ride another day than be out because of abrasions and hematomas. The gravel on the trail made me lose traction once and took me out for a solid 3 weeks.

Me and my friend did a weekend trip to Colorado Springs. We started off with all the tourist hikes. Incline, zip line, garden of gods, red rocks. We brought our dog with and after a weekend of go go go, omg this was the PERFECT Sunday easy walk. We had so many laughs and there were so many things to see from cool rocks, plants I’ve never seen and animals. It really felt like I was in lord of the rings walking this meadow lol. It was even better with light rain and clouds. It was magical. I’d run this trail everyday if I lived there. This was by far by favorite over all hike we did.
