First and foremost, we had a wonderful time at the campground. We booked a riverfront site and the campground was very quiet and peaceful for our entire stay. In fact, we were the only campers in our area for the entire trip. We camped during the second week of September, for reference. With all that being said, I do have some information that I would have liked to have known prior to booking and staying at the campground that I think will be helpful for future campers. When booking through the River Riders website, there is no obvious mention that the campground is in a separate location from the River Riders location or that the campground has a different name. In fact, on the website, the campground is referred to as “River Riders Campground” on at least one occasion. This is not the case. The campground is called “Harper’s Ferry Campground,” and is in a completely separate location from River Riders, and depending on what type of rig you’re driving, is a 15-20 minute extra drive. You first go to River Riders to check in. I bring this up because if you are driving a motorhome or towing a large RV, you cannot take Bakerton Road to access the campground due to the one-way tunnel. GPS directions will route you via Bakerton Road. When checking in, you are provided with a printed map of directions to the campground via an alternate route, however the alternate route is not usually an option when putting “Harpers Ferry Campground” into the GPS. Also for big rigs: there is no turnaround at the River Riders location when you check in. You either need to park in the gravel lot where the River Riders vehicles park, or on the side of the main road, or be prepared to reverse out of the parking lot. When checking in, the staff was not able to tell me or assure me that the site I had booked was a full hook-up site. When I booked the site, the description states “most riverfront sites have full-hook ups,” but doesn’t indicate which sites might not have hook-ups or what type of hook-ups are available. You are also not able to select your site, you are assigned a site based on the information you provide when booking regarding your rig/party size/etc. I was only able to select the option for “riverfront site.” When I asked at check-in if the site we were assigned had full hook-ups, the young girls stated, “We don’t know what that means.” Upon arriving at the campground, the site we were assigned (site 100) was too small for our rig (reminder that you do put your information into the system when booking regarding the size and type of your rig). Luckily, there were no other campers in our section, so we moved down to site 104, which worked for us (we have a 33 foot motorhome, no slide outs). For Verizon users, there is no cell service at the campground, but there is WiFi. Unfortunately, it was a challenge for me to call the office on WiFi calling to report the change in sites to them. I was eventually able to connect and thankfully, we were able to stay in site 104 as no other campers would be coming in until after our check-out. This process did go smoothly and the staff was very friendly about it. From what I observed, all 5 riverfront sites did, in fact, have full hook-ups. There are other site types available (river view, etc) and I do not know about those utility options. Lastly, when we checked in, staff informed me that we could purchase firewood at the River Riders store or from the campground host, who is camped in a RV trailer at the front of the campground. There is also a campground store at the campground. The store was not open for our entire stay, and I was not able to get ahold of the campground host either. You cannot bring your own firewood in due to the invasive lantern fly. All in all, we had a great time! I do feel what I’ve described above is worth mentioning for people considering booking at the campground!

We booked our stay four weeks ahead of time, called to confirm I could get two adjacent campsites, and that I would need two in order to have four dogs, and four adults camping in a tent. (Note: If you call, make sure you get the full name of the person you talk with.) I got the email confirmation, and had placed a note in the reservation notes as instructed by the person I spoke with earlier that day. When we arrived, in a van with handicap plates, they directed us to park in a lower lot and walk up a hill to check in. The place was a madhouse. There were no clear signs to direct you to where you needed to check in. When we found the counter to check in, exhausted already from the walk..they had given us campsites that had two sites between them. (Not adjacent, as we had requested on the phone and in the registration note.) When we asked to speak with a manager, he asked me to stop yelling. It was loud in the place, crowded, and I am hard of hearing, so I was probably yelling. I lowered my voice when he asked and he proceeded to speak to me as if I was a child. "Do you think we can do this without you yelling? If you can do that, we can see what we can do." I had already told him that I would wait for him to work something out. He said that the reservation notes don't get read, and that I should have called. When I said I did, he again asked if I could be calm about this because, "people camping where here to have a good time." Eventually they said we could have one of the two and would refund the other. They asked which we would like, we didn't know the area and hadn't seen the site so we said whichever. After getting that sorted and the directions to the campsite, we found our assigned site and were disappointed to find that there was a train across a one car width dirt road and up a steep incline of roughly 20ft. It ran nearly every hour throughout the night. Shaking the ground on a few of the passes. The campsite out of the two we were offered was muddy due to rain the past two nights, and the river was stirred up. There were barrels, trash, and trees obviously floating down the river a t a pretty consistent rate...discouraging us from swimming. Despite the temperatures over 90 degrees. The other site they had offered was better, bigger, and had grass, but we got mud. In the morning, we drove to the base of the hill where the showers are located. Walked up the hill to find that there was no water. We went back down the hill to get the caretaker/maintenance guy and he was not there, his truck was gone, and no one answered the door. All in all a very disappointing and upsetting experience. WILL NEVER GO BACK! Highly recommend you find a different place to camp.

Not the worst but could be a better flat water tubing experience. They really are doing the bare minimum. We went on a Saturday so it was extra crowded. The first thing to note is that you'll be parking off road and will have to walk up a pretty large/steep hill on large gravel rocks to reach the welcome center. The center itself wasn't very large, cabin like, and only had a couple lockers for rent ($6). The toilets and changing room was small, there were only 3 girls stalls and the water at the sink was not working. It was barely a trickle and they should get that fixed ASAP! They make you come an hour earlier to sit on the patio and watch a video (Note there is NO close captioning) and the packed patio is loud! We couldn't hear where our guide announced the pickup point/if he even did, so we just went with the flow with everyone else and got on the bus which was packed- every seat was full. The bus drive there is a bit bumpy, but they drop you off where it's just a free for all for tubes. There is no one to check you get the right tube that you paid for, or if you have any issues. The river was pretty shallow getting in and you really have to walk out towards the center to get a slight flow. However, the current isn't very strong and will constantly push you to the shore so you really have to work to get back into the center of the river. This doesn't really make for an relaxing float. People brought coolers, drinks, snacks, speakers so bring those if you're going (they apparently don't check what you have). For the getting out point, we passed a place with a inflatable wavey thing, and went to the second that had a sign. NOTE this is the wrong place!! You have to keep going further down to the THIRD location which is the one for this company. We got out at the second and had to walk for 5 minutes over gravel to get to the final location. * Bathrooms small and dirty after many people used it. SINKS WERE BROKEN! * No close captioning for video, buses are pretty cramped and no AC. * Bare minimum workers meant no one handing you tubes, you just grab one. * Take out point is the THIRD ONE with a sign that will say River Rivers. The bank area is flat and sandy. I think next time I'd try one of the other tubing companies nearby.

Actually, the whole campground was terrible and my family (wife and two young kids) left after one night. Worst “campground” ever “Relax on the porch and enjoy the serene Potomac river with your family or friends” * The advertised view of the river was obstructed by a wall and some weird electronics pole that were curiously missing in the website photo * The sites are almost on top of one another, the table for the next door RV site was against the wall of our cabin * There was a random extension cord running along the ground across the “path” to the river through the site (trip hazard) * You can’t get to the river without stepping over the cord and weaving your way through cables for the zip line * Cars honk repeatedly, all hours of the day and night as they go through the adjacent tunnel. Even if you can sleep, it is impossible to relax during the day with the incessant noise * There is a train that runs right next to the campground at all hours * The oddly short picnic table sits on top of the access door to some kind of tank ( water? septic?). The caps to the vent stacks kept getting knocked off * Best of all, our first night, water started to run out of the base of the toilet all over the bathroom floor * Water or sewage (it stunk) was bubbling up out of the ground through some plumbing under the cabin. I spoke with the staff and asked them to check on it and get back to me about what the mystery water was, if the water was safe to drink, and when it was fixed. We never heard back from them * When we went to check out early after the first day the staff didn’t even ask why ( I’m sure we are not the first to cancel our trip early because the lodging was so bad ). When we then asked for a refund of our second nights stay We paid the ridiculous price of almost $500 for two nights at this property * Learn from our mistake, don’t stay here!

We had high hopes before we decided to use River Riders for our business team building activity. We booked our reservation over the phone and indicated that we are all healthcare workers and need to be protected by the CDC guidelines and all COVID-19 preventive protocols as we will be providing healthcare services after this weekend. When we arrived to the rafting area, the lead guide, Brad asked us to sit in groups of 7 in the rafts that are designed for 4 people. We asked him to make arrangements so we can keep the safe distancing protocols and follow the preventive measures against COVID-19. He refused and started to shout at one of our Doctors, who denied getting in the same raft with six more people. While he was shouting he came extremely close and did not have a mask on his face breaking all safety protocols. This is unprofessional and callous! He then said none of you are going, step aside and wait for arrangements to cancel your trip. We had 20 members of our team who made plans for a nice event and were being shout at and degraded after months of frontline service to our community. We were than informed that another raft was prepared to accommodate us and he was removed from our group activity. The rafting experience was fun and John went out of his way to make things better for us. The trip was short and the conclusion was awful as we were packed in a bus with 50 other people and absolutely no social distancing in practice. We will never use this company again and will NOT recommend them to others.
