Our first trip to Stone Mountain for Fall Break and the park itself is huge! Amazing to see for sure. I was sad to realize that ALL the shops and areas aside from the tram up to the top of the mountain were closed during the week for our entire stay. I am sad that we were not able to enjoy any of the park drone shows, train rides, shops, etc. so be aware of that when booking if you plan to enjoy any of those things make sure that you are including a weekend in your travel dates.
We stayed in campsite 268 lakeside and had great access to put in our kayaks which we brought due to the online rules of no boats operating on the lake over a 10hp motor. The bad for this- my husband and son enjoy bass fishing and so were excited to enjoy this lake due to the online reviews and posts about the bass population in the lake. While on the lake in kayaks fishing there were others also on the lake in power boats well above the regulations. When we inquired how the rules for the lake were regulated, we were told that the campground staff do not enforce the rules about watercraft that they would need to call in a ranger who would have to put in a pontoon to issue a citation for anyone who was not within guidelines but that there was no one on duty. So basically the rules are there but no staff are enforcing them. I say this because we didn't bring a boat with us due to the online rules for the lake and instead brough kayaks to be in compliance. It was frustrating to see that people can basically do what they want with no consequence and others who were following the posted rules basically just need to deal with it.
The campground is HUGE. Entry to the park was very narrow. We tow a Jeep behind our class A so when we had a $20.00 parking fee at the gate to park for the week on the grounds anywhere, we were fine with it. We also traveled with 2 other family members and their Class A motorhomes with no tow behind vehicles. They were also charged a $20.00 parking fee at the gate for the motorhomes they had already paid their campsite rentals for. Very confused on that logic but wanted to share that also for everyone. Our site was gravel/sand but very level so if you have anything 36 ft or longer that site would be great for you. Our family had the two sites across the road from us, and both of their Class A motorhomes front wheels were off the ground to level them. We were on the larger of trail M and the road is horrible! Major dips, holes, bumps, etc. so beware of this while traveling. The huge natural growth of the mature trees on the grounds was beautiful, and we enjoyed but there is no apparent routine grounds maintenance happening for general upkeep on the grounds. Most sidewalks also will be challenging if you are pushing a stroller due to the debris from the trees not being blown or removed from the sidewalks. Staff at campground were very kind and polite inside the camp store also. Camp Store does have small snacks/drinks as well as a few options for campsite needs or fishing. Great variety for a general store.
My son enjoyed a few rounds of afternoon golf at the course that is onsite and enjoyed playing there. We had a great experience at the clubhouse and with staff there as well. There are two courses available and even with a few tournaments that were already scheduled for the week he was able to enjoy time on the course as well.
There are absolutely long term campers on site also so I would definitely check when booking to ensure that you are not beside any that honestly look abandoned with stuff sitting around them outside. Some look like they have been sitting in the spots for years with debris and...
Read moreStone Mountain campground looks to be a nice campground at first sight. Itâs a large campground with nice camping lots situated at the lake. However, when I zoomed in a bit closer I discovered some inconveniences for this campsite:
Bringing or drinking alcoholic beverages on the campsite, or even have them in your possession, is strictly forbidden⊠đČ Why? Not a big consumer myself, but Iâd like to have the freedom to drink a beer or a glass of wine when Iâm on holiday. I assume this campsite has had to deal with big problems with people consuming alcoholic beverages in the past perhaps⊠Stone Mountain park cannot easily be reached if you are less mobile or donât have your own wheels. Itâs a 65 minutes walk to the Summit Skyride, as you need to walk around the lake via the main entrance, there is no bridge connection into the park. If you take an Uber, a 5US$ park entrance fee will be added to the price, despite the fact that you already paid for the park entrance. On week days very limited park attractions were opened, but the prices for the campsite were the same as in weekends. We were there on Monday-Wednesday and only the cable car to the top and the souvenir shop were opened. Likely not the direct responsibility of the campground that attractions are closed, but you canât deny the connection to Stone Mountain park, being the only campground in the park. I would have appreciated it if I was more prominently informed on the campground website about closed attractions. This would have been more transparent towards the customersâ expectations during the booking process. The pool is very nice, clean and refreshing, but the opening hours are subject to improvement. The pool opens at 11am each day, making it impossible for departing guests to make use of the pool in the morning on the day of checkout. Also the closing times of 7pm were not respected: we found the pool locked at 6.30pm and were not able to take a short dive anymore unfortunately. The showers were not very warm and could be modernized. The shower head is in a fixed position in the wall and the crane was for me at eye level. I bumped into it and I wounded myself a little, but not seriously.
To summarise the experience: the normal supplies (power and water hookup) were fine and other amenities (small shop, TV room) are present, but the overall experience could be better given my above arguments. Not sure if I would choose this campsite...
