THE CELL PHONE COVERAGE REVIEW!!!
Cell Phone Coverage- This is specifically for Sunset Campground unless stated otherwise! Tested coverage with 3 networks. AT&T, T-Mobile, And Verizon.
T-mobile - Occasional bar or 2, extremely slow, up near campsite 41, the less tree surrounded area campsites by the hill. Virtually Non-existent. AT&T - No coverage that I could find. Verizon- Verizon had surprisingly good coverage throughout the upper parts of the park which I visited (Sunset campground, grant grove village+restaurant, Grant Tree Trail, the drive up). Specifically in Sunset Campground I was getting 2-3 bars of "5G" (low band 5g which means it's not necessarily fast but has better signal strength) which via speedtest were giving me about 1 - 1.5 mpbs download in campsite 41. This was good enough for low video quality youtube streaming, discord, and internet browsing. Phone calls and whatsapp was iffy due to the internet having occasional hiccups that could end a call but was very good and surprising for a campground overall. Walking down into the belly of the campground I was getting 1-2 bars of signal and was still able to browse the internet. The campsites with open area on the kinda cliff area (like campsite 41) will be your best bet for coverage. When I was at grant grove restaurant I tested their wifi and found 2 things. That i had full bars of low band 5g (not particularly fast though) and that the grant grove restaurant wifi said its host was verizon when using the Ookla speedtest app. I believe Verizon is contracted by Kings Canyon national park for wifi over mobile internet and has a cell tower therefore providing the great coverage compared to the rest.
CAMPGROUND REVIEW: I've been to Sunset Campground and king's canyon national park many a time and its definitely a treat.
Currently its reserve only but was able to snag my favorite spot, campsite 41. There had been noticeable improvements to the campground with the bathrooms being nice (Some bugs but clean overall), although the mask requirement for the restroom was a tad annoying and not followed by anyone I saw. The staff were friendly and everything felt of high quality.
For the summer please bring something for shade if you are booking one of the less tree covered campsites like 41. We have a wonderful little thingie to provide uv and shade and it was a lifesaver up there.
I dont recommend campsites 81-82-83. The ones between the 2 roads on the top left of the campground as they are extremely cramped together with virtually no privacy.
Overall, I was yet again very happy with Sunset Campground and would...
