As far as national parks go this one is on the pricier side to drive up the auto road (I’m comparing to recent experiences at Bandolier national park in New Mexico, for example) because they don’t charge per vehicle but rather by person in the vehicle, but still very much worth the price for the views along the way. No pictures from the very top this time because the summit was enveloped in a cloud, so pictures are of the view in mid-October as we came back down from the summit and pulled off in subsequently lower car turn-off points to cool the brakes of the car and enjoy the views. We were also (pleasantly) surprised that the gift shop at the top WAS open even though the toll booth attendant had warned us there was no facilities open at the top. Struck me as a bit strange.

Sitting atop the Northeast’s tallest peak, Mount Washington is the Mount Washington Observatory. Founded in 1932 On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a wind speed of 231 mph - the world record for most of the 20th century and still the record for a measured speed, not produced by a tropical cyclone. the Mount Washington Observatory and Weather Station has been continually manned to record the weather and other atmospheric data. there is a live cam you can find on the web. The Summit of Mount Washington is either in the clouds or fog for at least 300 days per year. The Lowest recorded temperature on the Peak of Mt Washington is 47 Degrees F below zero.

Superb climb up on a perfect weather day. Our van driver Carol was passionate and outstanding as she delivered a wonderful review of the history of the Auto Road and Mt. Washington...home to the worst weather in the world. An excellent take in and a must do if you are visiting this region. Pick a clear day if you can because the summit is often enveloped in clouds 70% of the time. Take a tour in the Observatory ( prebooked) and see the museum for detailed information on life at the top of the highest mountain in the Northeast and some of the tragedies that have occurred. Also the detailed story of the strongest wind gust ever recorded in April 1934.

Really adorable little museum/discovery center. A great way to explore the science of what's going on up on Washington without having to suffer the brutal elements most of the year. I went with a friend (we're both in our early 30s) and we had a blast. Spent about 20 minutes straight at the water/wind activity, working on getting the little boat into it's harbor. Such an epically fun and simple challenge. This would be a perfect spot to bring kids on a rainy day, or even a sunny one! Oh and the gift shop is fantastic.

Fun family place to experience hands-on science about weather. They had plenty of experiment stations, information displays, and a great 10-minute movie of the weather on Mount Washington. Takes about an hour to do everything. Our family enjoyed working together to try to get a boat blown into its dock. Definitely worth doing! Great gift shop too.
