Whoever the girl is that does the wildlife rehabilitation is awful. I work at an animal hospital and have dealt with her a few times. Once it was baby squirrels that someone dropped off to our dog/cat animal hospital. She told me that they should have been left where they were found. I told her the woman didn't speak English and just left them at the counter so I had no way of knowing where they came from. She reluctantly took them and seemed very annoyed about it. Next, it was orphaned baby raccoons. The mom was trapped in an employees attic and relocated and then later the employee heard babies up there and had no way of reuniting them with their mom. I called this time (since she wasn't very nice the first time) and wanted to confirm they wouldn't be euthanized. She made a slick joke about how she's in this business just to euthanize animals and acted like I was an idiot for asking. Lastly and most recently, a client brought in another baby squirrel and said it was dying and needed to be euthanized with it's brother. The brother did but the female seemed okay. My car was in the shop so I took the squirrel home and ordered squirrel formula and cared for it. Once it was a little larger, we called about bringing them the squirrel so she could be released back into the wild... and wow- she told me I was breaking the law, she would euthanize the squirrel, I signed its death certificate, you name it.... all because I cared for it for a brief time. The rudeness was outrageous. I did not take it to her, and instead I drove 5 hours away to a wonderful certified rehab woman that loves squirrels and took over for me. She sends me updates and squirrel is due for release next weekend from their facility. The difference between these 2 women is night and day. I don't know how the woman at this facility keeps her job with the way she speaks to people and handles wildlife. As an animal employee myself, it's appaling and shameful. To tell someone you would euthanize a baby animal that they've been caring for and are trying to give the best chance to... its just plain mean on so many levels. And then there's real angels like the one I ended up finding who actually care. I do not recommend taking wildlife to...
Read moreCalled regarding an injured turtle that was on the road. The wildlife specialist called back very quickly. She stated that the blood on the turtle shell can be a result of “road rash” In which case the turtle can be released. I explained that I cannot determine if there is a crack or if this is “road rash”
The call went in circles. I hung up the phone feeling like I was being a burden. Why not just have me bring the turtle and evaluate the turtle? There was no plan made for the turtle. I called another facility and this facility encouraged me to call Sawgrass back.
I called the wildlife specialist again; there was no answer. I called the main number and was told that if the wildlife specialist didn’t answer, this means she is busy doing something else. I explained my concern regarding the assumption that the turtle likely has a “road rash” without even evaluating the turtle. I asked what I am supposed to do. I explained that I have spent hours trying to find a facility that will accept the turtle. The representative on the main facility number stated that the office will not reopen until Tues(I called on a Sunday). The representative suggested I call the police department.
This is exactly why some people may not stop to help. Such a disappointment. No one is more disappointed than the turtle.
I am sure that the facility may do good work. They certainly failed this turtle in need of help.
This facility seemed to have a good reputation in the community but my experience has left a lot to be desired.
As for me, I wont donate anything to this place. This is not to say that others should not. Very dismissive attitude. I contacted...
Read moreThis center could be so much, but will never thrive with Allen Rose. The current Direct Allen Rose collects the money, but where does it go??? They have had two Gala in 2015 50K raised and 2016 monies were collected and never used for their purpose and he scrambled to get things done before this years Gala because they were asking when things were going to be completed and where is the money?
You tell the staff they need to cut expenses and you list the animals food REALLY try your of $5,000.00 a month salary Allen!
Funny how you are starting to suddenly start doing things at the center for the habitats. I truly hope you actually put the money into the center and those animals because you are going to have to answer for it. This is a non profit 501(c)(3), which means you have to account for the monies. I truly hope you get that place in order because it is all about taking care of the animals and not personal gain.
What about the Turtle raffle for the replica of the turtle for $5.00 a ticket?? Why is it still under the desk in the admin building where is that money and who is the winner. Money was collected and they want to know the winner if not you need to refund that money to every person because they is FRAUD to collect and never annouce a winner. Please for the sake of the animals get the center in order and every person who sits on that board do your job and make sure everything is run correctly. Wendy W, Matt F, Linda P, Greg W, Elaine W, Susan K, Penny K and Linda P. You are on this board and you are just a responsible for this and Allen Rose you please review what...
