Kaw Mission State Historic Site — Attraction in Council Grove

We visited the Kaw Mission State Historic Site on July 31, 2025, and absolutely loved it. The site offers a fascinating look at the history of the Kaw (Kanza) people and early Kansas settlement, with well-curated exhibits and peaceful grounds. The museum attendant was exceptionally helpful and friendly, answering our questions and sharing insights that brought the stories to life. If you’re passing through Council Grove, KS, this is an excellent stop—educational, memorable, and well worth the time....

We stopped while traveling to stretch our legs on the walking path along the water. This historic site was in front of the parking area for walking. It was an interesting site that we weren't expecting. I don't think it was open that day, and I'm not certain it's a place you can enter. The buildings were nice to see, as well as the information posted near them, on the signs I shared here...

It's a little place that is rich with American history. It's not exciting, and I wouldn't recommend bringing children to visit as there is not much for them to do but run around on the lawn. It's great if you are interested in Native American history and how the natives were actually treated. Overall I felt a sense of sadness when visiting this place and reading the signs...
