Read moreThis state park is great for easy to moderate hiking. The most challenging leg of the hike was getting to the entrance at the Eastern Gate.
I was visiting my son, who lives nearby, right next to Jim Gilliam Park, not even a mile away from the entrance. The easy way to walk there would be to walk up straight up La Cienega Blvd, but there is very little shoulder on the road with fast moving traffic, making it unsafe to travel up there by foot. The only other way, from where we were, to get there is challenging. I'm in pretty good shape for 64, so I considered the steep, hilly roads through the Baldwin Hills neighborhood to be a strong, solid cardio and leg workout!
The main walking paths are well marked with small, dusty gravel. I loved the exercise equipment along the walkways. (Although I did not partake!) There's a charming area dedicated to hummingbirds! It's nicely maintained, dozens of feeders, freshly filled. A bazillion tiny hummingbirds fluttering around and singing those cute little hummingbird songs was an unexpected surprise.
The brush is not lush and green like some other trails, but more dusty and dry. The views are great but not as amazing as other hikes I've taken through Griffith Park or to the Hollywood sign, or the Getty. The lack of crowds makes up all that, though. It's a quiet park, or at least it was on the day we were there. The park is HUGE, I only saw a tiny area. I would definitely visit again to explore other trails.
Rather than walk down the hills to get back, we caught a bus, right at the trail head.
It was a great afternoon, highly...
Read moreThis review is for people interested in OFF ROAD CYCLING in Kenneth Hahn Park.
I saw on the map that there were bike trails in Hahn Park, so I rode my cyclocross bike there to check them out. After a few rides totaling about 25 miles, I can say the trails are not fun to ride on and not optimized for cycling.
The trails are primarily very hard pack fire roads and doubletracks with almost nonstop washboards. The rest are loose powdery dirt with short steep sections, as well as off-camber straights. Some tight switchback make things slightly more interesting.
There are a few singletracks, including some super steep drops that I wasn't going to try on my CX bike – definitely more for a trail or enduro setup. But those and the rest of the trails are extremely overgrown (at this particular moment). This means plants are continually smacking you in the face, pulling your handlebars, and compromising sightlines – not good considering the amount of hikers around.
Positives: awesome 360 degree views of the city, the wildflowers are pretty for as how overgrown they are, water fountains and restrooms for mid-ride breaks.
I hate to give Hahn Park only two stars, because parks are great, especially when they're smack in the center of a vibrant urban area. But don't come here expecting fun riding. It works for a quick cycling workout if you live nearby, as is the case for me. But it's not a destination if you're out of the way. For hiking or sightseeing or an escape from the city, it's a four- or...
