One of the most visited monuments on the first days battlefield at Gettysburg, the monument to the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was dedicated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1889. The monument is famous due to the bronze depiction of the regimental mascot, Sallie the dog. Nice stories are associated with Sallie at the Battle as she supposedly stayed with wounded soldiers from the regiment after the battle and rejoined the regiment after the Confederate retreat.

Battlefield Sallie was given to the 11th Pennsylvania as a puppy and took part in all their battles, taking position at the end of the firing line and barking furiously at the enemy. After Gettysburg, the survivors of the 11th PA returned to the scene of the first day’s fighting and found Sallie, weak but alive, guarding the dead of the regiment.

Sallie Ann Jarrett's loyalty to her soldiers at Gettysburg is one of the best-loved human interest stories of the Civil War. We think her soldiers would be pleased, if they could only know, that Sallie is still remembered today by Gettysburg visitors, many of whom leave flags, biscuits or flowers as tributes to her devotion.

The story of the 11th Pennsylvania's most brave and faithful member, a dog named Sallie, is unforgettable. If you have kids and plan to visit Gettysburg, get the book "The Eternal Soldier" by Allison Crotzer Kimmel and read them the story before you visit the monument site on Doubleday Avenue. Leave Sallie a pennie or a dog treat and pat her head...
