I traveled to Gettysburg over Memorial Day weekend and stayed at the Doubleday Inn. This AMAZING bed and breakfast is located directly across from the national battlefield. The proprietors, Greg and Sue, provided a warm welcome and a tour of the property (we arrived before other guests had checked in.) The tour included the perhaps "haunted" Paul room and the remainder of the house that's completely decked out with Civil War memorabilia. Later, we discovered that much of the memorabilia exists because the Rosensteel family played a large role in the area's history! ||When you tour the battlefield, be sure to climb up to see the view from the observation towers and stop to leave a doggy biscuit for Sally!||The entire property is a beautiful re-creation of the appropriate historical time, with beautiful wallpaper and antique furniture in every room, incredibly comfortable beds and bedding, and striking quilts. Cozy living, dining, and outdoor seating areas create a great environment where you can meet and chat with other guests, read any one of probably hundreds of available Civil War books, or observe the stunning scenery outside. ||Throughout our stay, our hosts were friendly and informative, with such amazing stories! Each day's breakfast was delicious (I'm talking to-die-for French toast and fresh strawberries!). ||I hope that as you read any of the negative reviews of this property (though there are few), you focus on the important criteria, not trivial concerns such as "the water for tea not being hot enough" (it was fine for me) or "Oh no! I can't have food in my room." (No, you're not children, but have you seen the mess some adults make with food? I have!) The Inn is a BEAUTIFUL, welcoming property in a peaceful and very humbling setting. You'll love it here! I did, and I'll definitely be back. Thank you, Greg and Sue, for a fabulous...
Read moreMy wife and I just had the privilege of meeting and staying at The Doubledsy Inn with owners Greg and Sue Rosensteel. From the moment we got to the front door we felt welcome. From the spacious well kept sprawling grounds to the quaint inviting livingroom, not to mention the lovely bedrooms. Daily breakfast which was outstanding and delicious bannana bread in the afternoon. These folks know how to make a memory for those visiting. No matter where on the grounds you choose to sit you can't help but close your eyes and feel the energy of the great battle that took place 157 years ago where you are sitting. They have captured the very ambiance of this remarkable area. Once you venture to the inside a rather extensive museum of family relics and stories of the family involvement of Gettysburg history. This couple know what it is to welcome guests and make them feel as if you have been best friends for years. If you have never been here you have missed out on so much. A hotel is but a room to stay in. Many employees whom will never remember you once you leave. Greg and Sue on the other hand open their Inn and care for your every need personally. They know how to make your stay even more personal. Do yourself a favor and don't hesitate to stay with this great couple. You won't regret your time with...
Read moreThe Doubleday Inn is located on the Gettysburg Battlefield, on Oak Ridge, with lovely views south to the town of Gettysburg and west to the fields and stone walls of the Battle's first Day -- when the Union First Corps was pushed back through the Town. It is a quiet, lovely, and deeply inspirational setting, with the Memorial of the Eternal Peace Light shining in the near distance. ||The location was, however, by far the best part of our stay at the Inn. We had no housekeeping at all during our stay, with no cleaning staff visible at any time. We cleaned our room and bathroom and made our beds each morning. Towels were not exchanged, or bedding changed. ||The meals might charitably be described as meager -- a couple of scrambled eggs, two (precisely) pieces of bacon, and a garnish of a halved strawberry. There were no fresh breads, no bagels, no muffins, no cereals of any kind (hot or cold), no yogurt, or fresh fruit, or any of the foods so common to Inns and B&Bs with this kind of daily rate. Everyone in our family has a very slight build and we never overeat, but we were all quite hungry following our breakfasts.||The common rooms are heavily cluttered with bric-a-brac of various kinds that also could use some serious...
