THE CELL PHONE COVERAGE REVIEW!!!

Cell Phone Coverage- This is specifically for Sunset Campground unless stated otherwise! Tested coverage with 3 networks. AT&T, T-Mobile, And Verizon.

T-mobile - Occasional bar or 2, extremely slow, up near campsite 41, the less tree surrounded area campsites by the hill. Virtually Non-existent. AT&T - No coverage that I could find. Verizon- Verizon had surprisingly good coverage throughout the upper parts of the park which I visited (Sunset campground, grant grove village+restaurant, Grant Tree Trail, the drive up). Specifically in Sunset Campground I was getting 2-3 bars of "5G" (low band 5g which means it's not necessarily fast but has better signal strength) which via speedtest were giving me about 1 - 1.5 mpbs download in campsite 41. This was good enough for low video quality youtube streaming, discord, and internet browsing. Phone calls and whatsapp was iffy due to the internet having occasional hiccups that could end a call but was very good and surprising for a campground overall. Walking down into the belly of the campground I was getting 1-2 bars of signal and was still able to browse the internet. The campsites with open area on the kinda cliff area (like campsite 41) will be your best bet for coverage. When I was at grant grove restaurant I tested their wifi and found 2 things. That i had full bars of low band 5g (not particularly fast though) and that the grant grove restaurant wifi said its host was verizon when using the Ookla speedtest app. I believe Verizon is contracted by Kings Canyon national park for wifi over mobile internet and has a cell tower therefore providing the great coverage compared to the rest.

CAMPGROUND REVIEW: I've been to Sunset Campground and king's canyon national park many a time and its definitely a treat.

Currently its reserve only but was able to snag my favorite spot, campsite 41. There had been noticeable improvements to the campground with the bathrooms being nice (Some bugs but clean overall), although the mask requirement for the restroom was a tad annoying and not followed by anyone I saw. The staff were friendly and everything felt of high quality.

For the summer please bring something for shade if you are booking one of the less tree covered campsites like 41. We have a wonderful little thingie to provide uv and shade and it was a lifesaver up there.

I dont recommend campsites 81-82-83. The ones between the 2 roads on the top left of the campground as they are extremely cramped together with virtually no privacy.

Overall, I was yet again very happy with Sunset Campground and would...

Overall this campsite was okay but not amazing. Booked this campsite in August during Covid , the park was quiet and the majority of campers are families and couples. I read all the reviews, scoured over internet photos before committing to three nights here.|Pros: |-Campsites are pretty large and clean with ample parking space, (Depending on your campsite, read down below to my cons)|- Most campsites are shaded with trees , you can hang hammocks and clothes lines.|-Clean restrooms , flush toilets, stainless steel commercial sink to wash your dish-wares.|-Garbage dumpsters are easily accessible within walking distance.|-Metal bear boxes are fairly large.|-Abundance of firewoods you can collect.|-You feel like you are in the forest. |-Water faucet fill stations are easily available.|-People wearing mask during Covid|-Sheriff patrolled the area during the day.|-Park Maintenance service restrooms on our third day.||Cons:|-Beware! some sites are literally on top of each other, fortunately during Covid this campground is under 50 percent capacity, We got stuck next to a screaming family playing loud music who ran their generator all day, and the next night four college kids were drinking and screaming all night =( .|-YELLOW JACKETS |- Restroom flush toilets are extremely LOUD! If you book next to one , be aware you're going to hear every single person doing their business, the restroom lights are also really really bright.|-Our campsite was site #087 , if this campsite was at 100 percent capacity you are literally on top of each other, squeezed into one tight space. Also our site was in a deep valley/pocket so you can literally hear every single sound, snore, child screaming, car door slamming , and toilets flushing.|- Some campsites are not shaded with trees and not on leveled ground.|-The campsite road is a one way road with no signage , you will get lost , there were multiple cars driving in circles looking for their campsites. |- Walking distance to Grant Grove Market||This campsite was overall pretty decent and clean, not all campsites are equal . |Please pick up your beer bottle caps and play your music through your...

I’ll start by saying we got very lucky with getting the site that we did in a last minute effort to camp in Sequoia/Kings Canyon area while on a road trip. It’s called Sunset for a reason, but during the day is very hot in the summer. The sites in the upper loop have a great view, but as others have stated, be prepared for people to walk right through your campsite without asking or saying a word to get out to the rocks around sunset. These areas are of prime interest and although we had a time lapse set up, a hammock in the trees, wet clothes drying on the downed trees, and chairs out, people just walked right on through our site and stepped over our things. We also noticed people taking over the bathrooms in the evenings to change with their beauty products everywhere- again, pretty odd. Never experienced this anywhere else and we’ve camped all over the US. Luckily there’s a sink outside the restrooms and we could wash hands or brush teeth out there (as well as do dishes). There are two flush toilets per restroom and no showers at this campground. The closest showers are about an hour away at Cedar Grove, although they seemed pretty busy when we visited that area. The campground is very close to a camp store/market, a not so great restaurant & lodge, and a visitors center as well as a short drive from a few trails. As far as maintenance, the trash was overflowing and the bathrooms seemed like they had maybe been cleaned once in the three days we spent there. Some sites were spaced out like ours while others seemed very very close quarters, so look at reviews before booking.

As far as National Park campgrounds go this is a really good one. There are some sites big enough for RVs and travel trailers. I saw a lot of people showing up without reservations getting turned away because the campground was full the entire time I was there. Therefore, make reservation or risk being sent away. There are NO showers at the campground or any place nearby. There used to be some up by the village but not anymore. There is a store, restaurant, ranger station, and gift shop just a ½ mile walk up a nature trail away. I recommend walking there so you won’t have to deal with parking. Besides it’s a beautiful walk! We also walked to General Grant tree from the site. That was a another beautiful hike! The sunset at the back of the campground is amazing. There are different colors cast on the horizon each night. So bring your camera and take lots of pictures there will be a gem in one of those! I would have given this campground 5-stars, but one thing that I didn’t like was the water situation. There was one water faucet for the surrounding six sites and that faucet was right in the middle of our site. Literally between where we parked and our picnic table. People were constantly going through our site to get water. It was uncomfortable for them as well as for us. Sometimes my dog would bark at them because they would creep up on our site when getting water and scare her.
