ATTEND SOMEWHERE ELSE. Florida has better and more prestigious colleges than this trash school.
I don't even go here as a student but i have siblings who do and seeing the utter incompetence of this college is almost an insult to the city of Miami itself. MDC has better accessibility, on-boarding processes, and fairness in education to their students AND THATS SAYING SOMETHING. FIU does nothing but leech money from their students with employees that don't know how to do their job between: constantly delaying financial resources and refunds to students that desperately need it, fining students for the dumbest things its actually predatory, and then setting up the students for failure when they can't even afford stuff they need for classes. There's a very suspect system of financial distribution too when it comes to selection process of students who sign up for college's grants and scholarships, where students with an above 3.5 average have to scrap by but a 2.8 receives all the money? how does that make sense?
Professors don't even get proper on-boarding and then leads students to join phantom classes or even LOSE CREDIT because said professors get dropped because who ever is in charge of faculty is incompetent and should be fired. This then DELAYS the student's time there because they have to wait a whole semester (sometimes a whole YEAR) for classes they need to sign up again. But the college CHARGES students for "overstaying"? How is a time limit pushed on education??
Parking is an absolute joke, with there practically being NO parking for anyone on campus. Students shouldn't be charged, let alone receive citations, for the place they are attending. Even when they already went through the college's abysmal hoops to register their vehicle they STILL get punished for parking even though their car is in the system? For a college your employees should know how to read a license plate AT LEAST bare minimum.
This college is nothing but a money grubbing entity that are treating students like a business to stuff their wallets and ego. Attend somewhere else, a college name is not worth being financially and mentally stressed in the pursuit of a...
Read moreI chose to attend graduate school at Florida International University (FIU) because of its proximity to where I live and the hope that I could walk the stage one final time. Unfortunately, that experience didn't turn out as I had envisioned. The online coursework itself was manageable, and the instructors were generally fair and easy to work with. Balancing graduate school with a full-time job wasn't too overwhelming for me. As a Public Health major, I'm deeply passionate about the field and committed to being an advocate for underserved communities. However, my experience with the program's leadership, particularly surrounding the practicum, has been deeply frustrating. The practicum, a requirement for graduation, has been a source of constant setbacks. I've been enrolled in it for the past two years, the length of the entire program, and have faced repeated roadblocks. The first practicum site fell through due to issues on their end, which I take full responsibility for. The second site, where I wanted to work with a veterans' organization, was denied despite having ample time to pivot and re-engage. For the third site, I completed the entire process, including a 100-page report addressing five competencies. After submitting, I was told my portfolio did not meet requirements, yet no one could articulate what was wrong or how to fix it. When I sought clarity, I was met with vague advice to "let go of the past" and repeat the practicum after enrolling in a new prep course. This situation indicates that many students likely struggle with the practicum, yet receive little guidance on how to improve. What should have been a two-year Master's program is now approaching its fifth year for me, consuming significant time, energy, and financial resources. Regrettably, I cannot recommend this program to others. The leadership's lack of transparency and support has made it clear that student success is...
Read moreThis is the truth of FIU. All money in tuition and fees are not enough to pay all available stuff the college provides ( HIV testing, tutoring, mental health help, wellness center, modern look, modern technology...etc). So people complaining about money is not taking advantage of all FIU provides and only want a the bare minimum and say it’s FIU.
The buildings and technology is always modern. Professors are really good and always available for Office hours.
Our students are diverse; if you feel excluded there is a club you can join. Most students commute ( just like in UCLA), but many are involved in programs ( highly recommend). The area around FIU is safe and busy.
Staff is always changing and someone always cares. If you follow basic decency when speaking to a representative, you will eventually get an answer for your question. Not everything in life is super easy to take care of, especially when you have a complex hierarchy. Patience helps too.
Students are mostly nice. In college everyone is doing their own thing, so it’s not like many are up to starting a conversation and chilling. Getting into student organizations help a lot with meeting people and getting a friendlier feel of the Universisty. Join Greek life for a more social/party environment. This is not a party school like UCF. Everyone takes there stuff seriously.
I love FIU, and wouldn’t change my University. Most comments you will see here are negative because who else are they going to rant to? Take a tour of the school and see for yourself if FIU is the right school for you. I have been in FIU for 2 years, lived on campus for a year, and am involved in 2 major student organizations. I love it and am sad to see how some students don’t take advantage of...
