The Dover Hotel was built a few years prior to the start of the Civil War to accommodate riverboat travelers on the Cumberland River. During the Battle of Fort Donelson, Confederate General Simon Buckner established his headquarters at the Hotel and it was here that He surrendered his troops to General Ulysses S, Grant. Later in the War, the town of Dover was the scene of several smaller battles which resulting in the town being almost completely destroyed. Only a couple of original buildings remain, the Dover Hotel being one. The hotel is located on the banks of the Cumberland River, The interior has been restored to appear much as it did when General Grant and Buckner met her in 1862. Visitors are free to walk the grounds and rooms on the first floor of the building. It is a very interesting site. It was our last stop on our tour of the Fort Donelson Battlefield. It took me about 30-minutes or less to complete out tour of the hotel.

I could not enter the Hotel during operating hours due to no one being there and the doors were locked. It was still cool to walk around the premises and take in the historical event that happened here. The hotel is in great shape still. There's also beautiful views of the Cumberland River.

We enjoyed our visit to the Dover Hotel "Surrender House" where General Grant accepted the surrender of Fort Donelson. It is good to see significant places in our American history so well preserved.

The employees were exceptionally nice and helpful. This is the only hotel in Dover, Tennessee. It was like stepping through a time warp or getting in a time machine and traveling back to the 1980's. The place was throw back for sure! Had actual keys to the doors instead of key cards. I wish they had have had a contentinal breakfast or a indoor or outdoor pool. Our room had two full beds, a microwave, and a mini fridge. The only coffee pot was out in a make shift lobby which was a small room with a small coffee pot inside. The employees were very friendly, had great personalities and were very helpful and efficient. All of that maxe up for ALL that the actual...

Beautiful piece of American Civil War history! I wish that they had more to see at the house. It's literally sitting on a beautiful sight of the river, very relaxing. Love that they had another video at this stop in order to get more in depth look about the Hotel and how important it's role was in the Civil War. Take some time to breath in the fresh air and look out...
