The Dover Hotel was built a few years prior to the start of the Civil War to accommodate riverboat travelers on the Cumberland River. During the Battle of Fort Donelson, Confederate General Simon Buckner established his headquarters at the Hotel and it was here that He surrendered his troops to General Ulysses S, Grant. Later in the War, the town of Dover was the scene of several smaller battles which resulting in the town being almost completely destroyed. Only a couple of original buildings remain, the Dover Hotel being one. The hotel is located on the banks of the Cumberland River, The interior has been restored to appear much as it did when General Grant and Buckner met her in 1862. Visitors are free to walk the grounds and rooms on the first floor of the building. It is a very interesting site. It was our last stop on our tour of the Fort Donelson Battlefield. Read moreThe employees were exceptionally nice and helpful. This is the only hotel in Dover, Tennessee. It was like stepping through a time warp or getting in a time machine and traveling back to the 1980's. The place was throw back for sure! Had actual keys to the doors instead of key cards. I wish they had have had a contentinal breakfast or a indoor or outdoor pool. Our room had two full beds, a microwave, and a mini fridge. The only coffee pot was out in a make shift lobby which was a small room with a small coffee pot inside. The employees were very friendly, had great personalities and were very helpful and efficient.
