If you ever have a chance to come to this cultural gastronomy heaven or mercadito please do! In this review of Amapola I will give you some must try's and where to park. There have been many negative reviews from non users that I feel are completely unfair and inappropriate for this platform. My review as a local guide comes from decades of shopping at Amapolas
Amapola has been serving the Latino community for over 4 decades. It is unlike any market as they are known for their masa. Their masa is made In house and I am not saying it is mixed, it is actual real masa done the correct way, a rare thing. Most masa is like flour, Amapola does it the right why a very lengthy process. As you pull up the store the scent of the maíz cooking fills the air.
It is said that masa is more difficult of an art than sushi rice, I mean if you want it done right. On December 25, 2016 Christmas Day many people became upset and blamed amapola for ruining Christmas when it was discovered that something was off with the masa. Most of these complaints come from people who have been coming to the market for "20 years". 20 years that's a lot of memories where amapolas masa and groceries where the star, the business acted quickly and offered to refund the money paid and also the money for ingredients. Wow! How awesome. However this was not enough for people, some of these people said "Christmas was ruined" Really? Well you may want to reconsider and make some changes if Christmas was ruined over masa. You're healthy and your family is safe and you're together, sounds like a beautiful Christmas to me. I feel that these negative reviews are undeserving. This business has given me and most people an opportunity to continue traditions and build memories.
When you come to this location it could be a bit overwhelming, don't be overwhelmed, sometimes you'll get lucky and you can park right in the front, or there is a parking lot in the back that is also for you to use. This location is super tiny so come in with a plan. The salsas, carnitas and of course their masa is stellar.
They also take Apple Pay, visa MC. Amex.
I don't do the take out here there's no where to comfortably sit and it just doesn't travel well. :)
I really hope you take my word for it and make your way down to Amapola, seriously I believe that many of these reviews were done during a case of the ay...
Read moreWe have been loyal customers of Amapola for over 20 years and by far this was the worst experience! We faithfully get our masa for tamales from Amapola every Christmas. As we started preparing our tamales we noticed the texture was too grainy. We attempted to spread on the husk and was clearly not the same texture as other years. We decided to go back to Amapola and ask to either have it replaced or get a refund but to our surprise it was the worst experience! We were greeted at the door by the "Vice President" Jaime Lopez. Not only was he condescending and rude but was not interested to hear us out.We mentioned we have been loyal customers for many years and noticed the difference in quality. He immediately cut us off and said there was nothing he can do and thats the quality they have. I proceeded to ask if he could pls check the masa I had in hand and said he was not going to check and wasn't interested in what I had to say. He stated Amapolas policy is once I walk out those doors it isn't any of their concern!!! Amapola has always had good quality masa and now to this unfortunate situation you have lost several customers as all our neighbors, family and friends will no longer step foot at Amapola! I asked to speak to the manager and he said I would have to call corporate and speak to the owner but couldn't help me any further. So unprofessional! So rude! I still can't believe how poorly this matter was handled. I will be calling corporate to deal with this unfortunate incident. Please do not purchase your masa there! Once you step out that door they do not guarantee...
Read moreNon of their cashier speak English! And they will be offended if you speak English and in you ask questions in English they will not respond you its a kind of racist behaviour in language. I am wondering English is the official language of America. In every store, the employees must know English. I don't understand why the employees don't want to speak English in this store. The cashier often asked me about a fruit in Spanish. I didn't understand what she was saying. Then she finally made it. She took it out the bag and and showed me in the computer the name of fruit and I said yes, I know the name of this fruit is peach, but you were asking me in Spanish and I asked you to speak in English so that I could understand what you were saying.Amapola market rmployees rrfuse to speak English to non spanish customers so I usually don't shop at this store despite it being local and I prefer to shop at a store a few miles away where the employees speak English so it's easy to communicate with them, that's why this store is only for Spanish speaker not for English speakers they should mentioned it on google that nobody understand or talk English in this store and non Spanish people are not welcoming to shopping from...
