Have read the history of Uncle Henry's and it's not all true. Yes, Henry Offleman (Uncle Henry) owned the deli. It began as a meat market, but Henry loved to cook & make sandwiches for a few family & friends that spent a lot of time there visiting with him in his back room. He was a horse bookie and he was one of the funnest and most interesting men that I ever met. Henry was married to George Jr.'s mother, Lilas', oldest sister. Henry became very ill, looked like his market would have to be closed for a good while, so LILAS stepped in. She hired ME to help her!!! Not George. George was hardly there. How do I know? I'm Kathleen Ryan that was married during that time to Roger Gaul, George's older brother. We were married for 11 years. It's thanks to LILAS that the sandwich shop took off. Georgie (that's what he was called at the time to differentiate him from his father, George. See.....just to prove I know what I'm talking about.) had a full time job at the time. HE WAS, AGAIN, RARELY THERE to begin with. Not certain how long LILAS ran the deli, but by the time Henry was well enough to come back the clientele was built up so much that it overwhelmed an elderly Uncle Henry. I worked with him a few times after he took back over & it did look like it overwhelmed Henry. Then he talked to Lilas about selling and would she be interested? SHE WAS!!! She had discussed this with me before Henry even mentioned it to her. She LOVED, she told me, working at the deli. The next thing that she told me was that she was shocked & hurt that Georgie had talked to Henry, behind her back as she led me to believe & signed documents to purchase. I have read your "history of Henry's" numerous times. Without Lilas there is no history and most about Georgie is myth In my view and what Lilas told me at the time Georgie stole the deli from his own mother Believe it. I repeat - she was very hurt at the time.. Regardless of what's myth, or not, Lilas' name FOR SURE needs to be included. Without her most of what follows Henry's bio until, I guess, George III, is BS. Chat Conversation End Type...
Read moreI no longer agree with my initial review. I now feel like I've been treated well.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I ended up purchasing a "super size" Reuben and was presented with what felt more like a "pip-squeak" Happy Meal version of a sandwich. Regrettably, my colleagues had hyped up this place so much that I was anticipating a colossal, super-sized sandwich. Observing a pricing range of $13-$32, I assumed the middle option would leave me pleasantly stuffed, perhaps with leftovers. However, the only thing that fell within the "mid" category was the sandwich itself.
To say I was profoundly disappointed upon unwrapping the sandwich at work is an understatement. With a total cost of $19.74 and a base price of $17.95, my expectations were set high for one of the most spectacular Reubens in history. Instead, I received a rather lackluster and unimpressive sandwich. While every company has the right to price its products as it sees fit, the reality fell short.
The bread lacked the characteristic bursts of Rye, there was a noticeable shortage of sauerkraut, the sandwich felt dry with insufficient spread, and overall, it was more insipid than anticipated. It seems that if you truly desire a "REAL" sandwich, you must be willing to step up to the $32 version—quite a humorous realization.
Adding to the disappointment, the establishment doesn't even greet you at the door; you essentially approach a kiosk and input your order on an iPad. I'm pretty sure I would have rated this place higher if I had just been there for a beer, but I wasn't there for that. I unfortunately had zero interaction with an employee, so the human touch or even looking into an employee's eyes or smile to maybe help me rate this place higher is also not something this place provides. I personally won't be going to this...
Read moreHidden Gem? Check. Great Deli food? Check. 70+ amazing craft beers on tap? Check. This hole in a wall deli sure knows how to keep the locals coming, much like myself and strangers afar to see what the fuss is about. Located in a small Mexican market plaza in Downey, this place serves up great deli food and great beers. From George, to George, Christina, JR, Cameron and the rest, these guys/gals make you feel like your family to them with their friendliness, funny personalities and passionate knowledge about the beer they serve. Most beers do full pints and as well they offer flights prices vary on type of beer Every month or depending on their scheduling, they will do tap takeovers of certain breweries and thats an opportunity you just cant miss out on. Also, they have beers to go from to stuff thats typically on rotation to some rare gems, so be on the lookout!
All of their sandwiches are amazing, but when you become a regular, they know what YOU like and you know what you will eat, but just bigger and with more meat on the next trip! I usually stick the Sicilian, because how can you go wrong with Prosciutto in a sub?
Yes, I see the reviews about it being small and not enough space, but hey look at it like this, small joints create a vibrant atmosphere that gets you to interact with other beer enthusiasts and learn and try new beers you wouldn't think you would like.
Other than that, I will be back more often as much as I can because these guys make me feel like Im at home, except Im just not in my undies with a beer in...
