Clinical trials can be lifesavers and buy time for sure. City of hope is far more advanced in cancer treatments than most local hospitals & doctors and I would definitely recommend going to City of Hope for cancer treatments. The staff and volunteers are phenomenal for the most part. We were very thankful to be part of a clinical trial that extended our time with a loved one with cancer, but cant help feeling railroaded into a known flawed treatment for the whole term of the cancer until death. The Dr's agenda seemed to trump our treatment choices or wishes. The doctors were unwilling to set up & do newly FDA approved stemcell treatments when we asked several times, all while our loved one was still strong enough and physically qualified. We had cash to pay even, but apparently it wasnt more than the drug company was offering them. I feel the doctors wanted to carryout and finish their clinical trial experiments even though it was obvious what the outcome would be from all the previous clinical trial failures, and that ultimately kept our loved one from the most appropriate and hopeful treatment available(according to New Zealand & European studies, which are far more advanced in cancer treatments than the US). The only advice I can give is to advocate as much as possible for the patient(when someone gets diagnosed with cancer it is way too stressful for them to think straight & make important decisions), be assertive when voicing opinions and wishes, and get that 2nd & 3rd opinion early which may lead to changing clinics or Drs, but at least there are no regrets. So little time we have to figure...
