East Brunswick Seafood & Fish Market — Attraction in East Brunswick Township

This spot has a lot of favorable reviews which made me try it. I didn’t find this place to be worth a 5 star rating at all. Upon entry there were only two couples beforehand They had placed their orders and waiting. It took the person approx 10 -12min to help me. While time passed I perused the refrigerated items but the store is so dim making it difficult to see what’s inside the refrigerators. I was looking for fresh fish (whitings). Finally the person came to assist and there was the whiting all covered in ice and difficult to view. As I ask the fish man to make them visible I noticed most of the whiting fish didn’t look fresh at all. He pointed to some pre bagged whitings which appeared horribly bruised so of course I declined the pre bagged whitings. Yuk, is he kidding me! As he reluctantly pulled out a few from the ice I selected a small quantity because most of the fish he pulled eyes were really red. Once I saw a few that appeared ok I asked for them to be filleted head and tail off and also purchased the small frozen shrimp platter to make my trip worthwhile. Once home I noticed the shrimp had freezer burn on some and the fish didn’t have a real fresh fish taste after cooking. Needless to say I will not return. I was looking for a fresh seafood spot close to my new home. Looks like I’ll have to travel a bit further for a good fresh fish market. East Brunswick isn’t it. ...

This market it literally right around the corner from my house. Tonight my wife and I decided to check it out so this review is only based on one experience. We purchased some wild caught shrimp in shell as well as two snapper fillets. While the snapper was good, it wasn't the freshest I've had but to put things in perspective I've been a fisherman for many years and often consume fish that was literally swimming hours ago so my bar is high. The shrimp however were some of the best I've found locally and the fact they had wild caught not just farm raised was a huge plus. We will return, perhaps next time I'll ask more questions since we're open to eating many varieties of fish and see what was brought in the most recently.
