The town has undergone gentrification, and even individuals with accents, regardless of ethnicity, face discrimination. Some library staff members are not particularly welcoming. For instance, when we returned books, I asked for confirmation that they were checked in on the spot to avoid any potential issues. Instead, I was curtly instructed to drop them off in the outside box. On another occasion, I forgot my library card but presented my ID. The staff member I dealt with was quite rude, so I ended up paying for a replacement card—only to find my original card at home later.
I suspect these experiences may be influenced by my accent. As a result, our interactions with staff have been minimized. We now return books via the outdoor dropbox and use self-checkout, even when staff offer assistance. While some employees are friendly, a few are not. I attended a bridal shower there in September 2011 and was very impressed with the space provided for the party. The gardens are very well kept, and the house is spectacular. Everything is fully period and well restored if not original. The library may be the last place you'd think of to host an event, but this one is a great value for a lovely, first-rate location.
