Lots of history, stuffed animals, not the toy kind, and amazing art to be seen. Didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. On the first floor, there were animals from all around the world. All posed in different positions, it was a truly unique experience. They were fascinating to look at. I enjoyed that part quite a bit. Upstairs, they had art displayed from the local schools, and some of those pieces were quite impressive. Some of those kids have some reap talent. You'll also find art from Ansel Adam's and my personal favorite Edward Borein. There is so much to look at you can spend a lot of time in here. We then headed back downstairs where there was Native American bead work on display and weaved baskets. They had lots of displays for the history of Elko, including a tribute Bing Crosby and lots of guns. It was all very interesting and ie a must-see for any history buffs or anyone who wants to know more...
Read moreThis museum is a must-see for one reason: taxidermy. It has an incredible collection of taxidermy from animals all around the globe. There are sections for simply Nevada animals, North American animals as a whole, animals from Africa, animals from the Arctic, and more. There is even a crocodile that someone hunted in Egypt and then moved across the world to this museum.
To say that I was amazed would be an understatement. I was never an avid fan of taxidermy, but these exhibits blew all my expectations and impressed me beyond what I could fathom. The fact that so many animals from all around the world are preserved for display in this small town must be seen. Some are even preserved in poses, looking like they are still stalking their prey, or that they may come alive at any moment as you’re observing them. Come see this museum, it was one of the best I...
Read moreNice collection of historical items in the Elko area. I enjoyed the two gun collections, and the displays and descriptions of moving the railroad out of the center of Elko. I also enjoyed the artwork on the 2nd floor of the museum. I was appalled by the stuffed animal exhibit. It is my understanding that this exhibit was done on behalf of a wealthy donor whose donation stipulated that the donor's animal collection be included as part of the museum. I find it repulsive and disgusting that someone killed all of these wild animals just to have them stuffed and mounted as trophies. I would have given the overall museum a much better rating if not for...
