A regular destination for me and my paddle friends out of NYC. The beach at the north end is 8.73 miles from Manhattan Kayak Co. (next to Intrepid in Hell's Kitchen) on Pier 84 in Hudson River Park. For me it was fascinating to realize that the boat basin had not begun life as a picnic area for thousands of New Jerseyites, no, originally, it was built as the steamboat landing for the grand 500-room wooden hotel atop the cliffs called the Palisades Mountain House. That structure, built in 1872, only existed until 1884, when it burned to the ground within the space of just two hours without loss of life.
