Lily Mountain Trail is so fun and there is quite a bit of elevation throughout the trail! At the end there is a climbing section that is very easy (i’m real bad at those bouldering gyms and this was a breeze). My two tiny dogs made it to the top of the trail without the climb part and all the dogs this day were friendly.
Saw some kids but if your children aren’t accustomed to doing hikes at high elevations, I’d maybe do a different trail since I could see some spots further along the trail being easy spots to fall down.
The only thing I’d do differently is parking. It was difficult getting to the trailhead because we had to park at the nearby and walk on the highway to get there. It wouldn’t have been possible with a larger dog since the walk has some really narrow spots. Plan accordingly and arrive early so you can snag a spot right next to...
Read moreIncredible trail! It really has a wilderness vibe to it, and I wouldn't consider it for anyone who wasn't in decent shape or young, as it's pretty much an incline for 2.5 miles (I can't remember the exact distance, but it's like a 5-6mi hike, I believe).
I did go when there was ice and snow on 80% of the trail and I didn't have micro-spikes which made the hike quite slow and difficult (I'm a pretty strong hiker with a very fast pace). It's rated as moderate, and I think it's pretty appropriate. If it was dry or I had spikes, I'd consider it about average in the moderate category and in the conditions I went, borderline between upper moderate and lower difficult.
I did leash my dogs all the way up until the last climb. With the snow and ice, it just wasn't safe to scramble (and it's an actual climb) while being attached...
Read moreHiked this trail 5/24/2020 with 9 & 11 yrs old kids. We were staying at gorgeous Peak view retreats at Estes Park vacation rental, facing Lily mountain, twin sister, Estes cone and longs peak. The kids wants to explore the mountains. So we picked the Lily mountain trail. It was very convenient, only 7 minutes away. That morning started to rain and snow. But we decided to give a try anyway. Plenty of parking when we got there at 9 am. Loved the Wild flower and fresh natural air. We only made it halfway because the snow got very heavy. The 1st half was very flat and easy. Kids said that was their best hike ever and loved it! About a month ago we made it all the way up to the top of Lily mountain without the kids and spikes were needed for the 2nd half. Great 360...
