Read moreBeautiful views, awesome cliff faces (I only looked at them, didn't climb anything), and gorgeous prairie on the top.
Almost no shade, but that doesn't take away a star for me. I would rather come prepared for the landscape than suggest that they plant trees and change the landscape for human needs.
Lots of trail options for whatever distance you can do/have time for.
The only bathroom is at the parking lot, so definitely "go before you go."
My only complaint was that some of the mountain bikers didn't give adequate warning – sometimes no warning at all – when approaching to pass. I was passed too quickly, sometimes too closely; it happened on thin single-file trails and on wide trails alike. I also had my dog with me, on a 6 foot leash, and half of my anger at the cyclists was that they could have hit my dog. They passed her too closely, and she could have been spooked and darted out in front of them on accident. This is obviously an issue that only the cyclists can fix, and is not a problem with the park itself. Mountain bikers, please please please announce yourself – don't count on the sound of your tires on the trail to be heard in time – and slow down. Your ride won't be ruined if you have to...
Read moreThe hike is what you make of it. I grew up in Golden, and this place was off-limits back in the early 70s. They did the right thing to open it up. It has remarkable geological features, and you may never see it this green again in a lifetime. The wild flowers last numbered in the dozens. Would avoid the west side entrance. It's just a road. Go hike the trails from the east acces trail onn the W/SE side. Watch out for mountain bike AH's....most almost very courteous, but it just takes one. Spent 4 hours there...best views of the Flat Irons still not polluted with development. The line of mesas are simply incredible. In retrospect, the area should of been at least a state park. But Coors ruled the day. Have fun and pack out what you pack in. Moderate slopes in some areas but very doable for greenies. I'm 60 with several health issues but EZ PZ. Would recommend a walking pole with a good grip if you have issues with balance. We made an early morning trek. Would not suggest it in the middle of the day. Thx to my brother and nephew for supporting...
