An Unforgettable Blend of History and Natural Beauty at Wormsloe State Historic Site

Wormsloe State Historic Site was an absolute highlight of our visit to the Savannah area, offering a truly unique and enriching experience that perfectly blended fascinating history with captivating natural beauty.

What truly set this site apart for us were the incredible walking trails. We loved exploring the well-maintained paths that wound through the lush maritime forest, offering serene moments and breathtaking vistas. As someone who enjoys trail running and hiking, I particularly appreciated the varied scenery and the chance to immerse ourselves in the Georgia low country landscape. A major draw along the trails was the opportunity to view the sprawling salt marshes. The sheer expanse and unique ecosystem of the marshes were mesmerizing. We spent a good amount of time observing the intricate network of waterways and the incredible wildlife within. The real stars of the show, however, were the cool crabs scurrying about! It was a delight to see so many fiddler crabs in their natural habitat, adding an unexpected and interactive element to our nature walk. It's these kinds of real-life connections to the environment that make learning so much more impactful.

Beyond the natural wonders, Wormsloe is steeped in history, which deeply appealed to our family. We greatly enjoyed looking at all of the historical structures, particularly the tabby ruins of Noble Jones's home, the oldest standing structure in Savannah. Seeing these tangible remnants of the past truly brought the colonial era to life.

Learning about Noble Jones himself was equally compelling. It's always fascinating to delve into the lives of the individuals who shaped history, and his story as one of Georgia's original settlers, a carpenter, doctor, and surveyor, provided such a rich context to the site. The exhibits and information at Wormsloe did an excellent job of presenting his contributions and the challenges faced by the early colonists.

Wormsloe State Historic Site is more than just a beautiful drive through an oak alley; it's an immersive journey through time and nature. For anyone who appreciates engaging walking trails, vibrant ecosystems, and a deep dive into American colonial history, Wormsloe is an absolute must-visit. We left with a profound appreciation for both the natural environment and the enduring legacy of early Georgia settlers. Highly recommended for a connected...

First, we arrive and go to purchase tickets. On the site, it says there is a military discount. The person working said that was only for disabled veterans. Ok. It also says on the site that you can purchase a GA historic site pass and that it includes Wormsloe. It says you can purchase that at any of the historic sites. The person working said that isn’t correct. I literally pulled it up on my phone from their website and she said she had no control over the accuracy of the website. So we paid almost $40 for 3 people. First, you don’t even get to see the outside of the gate that you see in the photos. They have it blocked off from the road and you take a tram that doesn’t even stop there. Same for the oak alley. You ride a tram down it but it doesn’t stop anywhere on it for photos. The oak alley is very long (500 acres and the alley goes from the road to the river so it is quite a trek). The tram should stop at the gate. Anyhow, the tabby house is in ruins. I knew that but there isn’t really anything else to see. The family gravesite has one grave. The “village” had a forge and small house. There was not a single employee doing any demonstrations or talks there. The museum had one guy sitting there playing on his phone and was worn out. This was the only thing we did in Savannah that was a complete waste. And they should be ashamed to not honor what it says on their actual website and to only honor a military discount for disabled veterans and not for other veterans. Very poor management. Also, there is only one tram, the speakers don’t work and you may have to wait up to 40 minutes for...

Awesome place to visit. We even enjoyed their little store. The walk down to the historic site is beautiful BUT definitely consider using the trolly they offer. Even better if you wanted to rent their bikes. We walked down and back and let me tell you… it’s long and can be exhausting on really hot days. Don’t forget to bring water and good shoes.

I don’t know if it’s the norm but the trolly did take a really long time to go back and forth. After walking the trails at the historic site, we waited 20 minutes for a ride before giving up and starting our walk back. There was a big line forming and looked to be more than what it could carry on one trip so we decided to walk instead so some of the elderly people had a spot on the trolly. We made it almost to the end of the road before we passed the trolly heading down to pick up the crowd. The walk took us maybe around 30 minutes on the way back.. so all together, if we had waited, it probably would’ve taken an hour total. Again, we don’t know if that’s normal. But that was the case on the day that we visited.

Our review might not sound too enthusiastic for a 5 star review but I just want families to be prepared. The place is really interesting though. I’d also imagine that walk would’ve been a breeze in...
