My mother moved into The Oaks on Skidaway Road in Savannah, GA, in June 2024. Over the past year, my family and I have encountered several significant issues that I feel compelled to share with anyone considering this facility for their loved ones.
My mother is a fall risk. The necklace with a button they gave her didn't work. We traded it out. They gave her another one, but that also didn't work. There have been at least two occasions where she sat on the floor for more than an hour waiting for help.
We have experienced problems with pests, specifically cockroaches in my mother's room and bathroom. Additionally, there were plumbing issues with her shower that resulted in leaks extending down to the dining hall during meal time.
The laundry service has also been inconsistent and a source of stress for my mother. Although her laundry day is scheduled for Thursdays, it is often collected on different days without notice. We have had instances of receiving other residents' clothing and my mother's clothes going missing. On one occasion, my mother saw another woman wearing her robe, indicating a significant error in the laundry process.
Furthermore, the staff turnover at The Oaks appears to be very high. Since last year, there have been changes in the executive office at this property, and we have heard rumors from other residents about potential misconduct leading to an arrest. The facility refers to orderlies as "care partners," many of whom seem to be young, hourly employees. It is concerning that there is a constant rotation of new faces, and it's unclear why the facility struggles with staff retention.
Shortly after moving in, my mother, who has Alzheimer's, formed a romantic relationship with another resident without Alzheimer's. My brother and I raised concerns about the issue of sexual consent, but the facility stated they could not intervene. This left us with ongoing uncertainty about my mother's well-being and whether she was being taken advantage of sexually.
The quality of food has also been a major concern. On one occasion, the kitchen staff reportedly yelled at my mother when she politely requested an alternative to liver, despite the facility supposedly having a daily menu for such situations. We were told that "care partners" should ask residents each morning about their preferences for lunch and dinner, but this does not consistently happen. Consequently, residents are sometimes faced with meals they dislike, and the chef has reportedly come out to reprimand both staff and residents in the dining hall.
Attempting to address these issues has been difficult. When I finally reached the regional manager, I discovered that she is married to the Vice President of the company. Her response to our complaints was dismissive, and she criticized me for not following the "proper chain of command." This experience suggests that complaints may not be taken seriously or may be covered up by upper management.
As of today, April 29, 2025, the regional manager has still not contacted me, despite her promise to "personally" call me and discuss the "investigation" into the kitchen staff. Still no word from her.
My grandmother also resided at this property in the 1990s, so our family has a history with The Oaks and had higher expectations. The current attitude from the corporate office demonstrates a lack of respect and disregard for my mother's well-being.
Currently, there are only two staff members at The Oaks whom I trust. I worry that when they eventually leave, there will be no one left who genuinely cares for my mother's well-being.
Finally, the deteriorating physical condition of the property, combined with the cockroaches and constant influx of new staff, leads me to strongly advise anyone considering The Oaks to conduct thorough research.
Disclaimer: The current ED at this facility, Delano, while very young, is one that I believe cares. He personally came up to my mother’s room to help her off the floor when the button didn’t work. Teresa and the medication team are the real glue....
Read moreI cannot imagine any legitimate reviewer giving this place 5 stars. We have repeatedly complained about our mother’s treatment in the memory care portion of the facility. Just this morning, there was no juice at breakfast (reportedly ran out yesterday when the “other side”came and got their last bottle - I suppose they try not to run out with residents who can complain or remember to tell family). In addition to that, what was provided for breakfast was burned biscuit, toast so hard she couldn’t eat it (supposed to have soft diet) and something indistinguishable. Her hair is rarely washed and there seems to be no routine bathing. Several staff were recently let go, supposedly due to embezzlement and mismanagement but I have no first-hand knowledge of that. We were hoping that the new Executive Director, who sent a letter introducing himself and asking everyone to contact him with any concerns, would make improvements. My husband called his office number on the letter knowing he would probably just get his voice mail but someone answered and had no idea who he was! After insisting upon leaving a voice message, he was transferred to the voice mail of the same person he has brought our concerns to numerous times. someone needs to do something. If we just keep relocating our loved ones, those that have no family will continue to suffer from this very subpar...
Read moreThis place is awful to staff or residents. The office staff is very unprofessional and creates a hostile work environment. The type of micro management at The Oaks is awful. Even the dishwasher is a cook at times. The turn over rate is extremely high and no one even bother to see why. Retaliation is at an all time high. When a resident fall it's not reported either. I can guarantee if the company does an exit interview, they will find out aabout what's going behind closed doors. If you have to addresss an issue the human resources the whole building will know. Do a private survey and see what you will get from residents and staff and you will learn a lot about your company the books around the facilty is not being done correctly. If the state ever pops up, you will be in...
