We went out on the Katahdin ( also known as “ The Kate” ) for our first time on there three hour cruise they call the Sugar Island Cruise. The cruise departs from Greenville Maine and sails north past Sugar Island where it turns around and heads back to Greenville.
The boarding process is an Interesting one… a note to all future passengers: They board in the order the tickets were purchased. So if your late to buy your tickets you’ll board last. It’s important to note this because there are only so many preferred seats. Those that have the best vantage points.. so think ahead!
We were the late ones.. and were called next to last so we had to sit on the lower floor in a corner but still enjoyed the view! One of the best things about the cruise is the views. The entire time on the boat you are rewarded with stunning mountain vistas! No matter where you are.
The boat itself is very large and there is plenty of space to move around. There are three levels. The lower level being the engine room and mechanical facilities, the second being sitting area’s both inside and out, bathrooms and a cafe that serves lunch , drinks and even beer. The third being the outside decks , wheelhouse and an inside area with some memorabilia of the ship’s history.
The staff is amazingly friendly and seem genuinely happy to help and share any knowledge they have on the boat itself and the surrounding area!
You can visit the wheelhouse , meet the Captain and he will show you the controls, and share speed , operating info and even let you steer the ship if you like! The view from up there is worth seeing!
We also did an engine tour and that was very interesting and I definitely recommend it. You need to wear ear protection ( they provide) A guide takes you to the lower level and you get to see the single Diesel engine that powers the ship! Very cool but very loud! You also get to see the massive generators and look out a porthole just above the water level!
We did get a bit hungry on board and did share a grilled cheese sandwich.. it was really good , made with fresh bread and American cheese and came with chips. We had hot coffee and an iced tea both of which were great as well! So no need to worry if you get hungry or thirsty the’ve got you covered!
The were two single person unisex bathrooms and both were extremely clean and well maintained. The boat itself was also very clean and free of clutter. I was impressed!
If you visit Greenville Maine and the Moosehead Lake area I would definitely recommend adding a trip on the Katahdin to you list! It’s one of the best ways to see and experience Moosehead Lake and the surrounding...
Read moreWe took the four hour Mt. Kineo cruise on October 1st, just as the foliage around Moosehead was starting to peak. It was a beautiful cruise on a beautiful, historic boat. Despite the fact that the Katahdin (the "Kate") is over a hundred years old, the ride was smooth with minimal engine noise (on the top deck, anyway. Not so much on the bottom deck, but you should check it out anyway for how different the perspective is between top and bottom decks). You'd be hard pressed to find a more peaceful, scenic boat ride in New England. The captain of the ship was, if I heard correctly, the captain of the same ship back when the Kate hauled logs across Moosehead. He had a wealth of great stories and, being a life-time resident, was very knowledgeable about the area.
Recommendations: 1) buy your tickets early. Boarding, from what I gathered, is not first come first serve, but in order of when each party bought their tickets. 2) When the boat gets close to Kineo (where it will turn around), head up to the bow on the top deck. The up close and personal views of the rock cliffs are absolutely incredible. 3) Usually concession stands are a rip off, but the one aboard the Kate is very inexpensive but pretty good.
We will definitely come back some day in the future. I hope the Kate is...
Read moreVery informative boat ride only thing that stands out is how they boarded the vessel. They boarded the vessel as when you booked the cruise. I understand they don't want passenger's running on the vessel but I've been on numerous vessels and boarding was never a problem. Secondly the speaker system in the back of the vessel you could hardly hear the narrative. You should have to go all over the boat to hear the narrative. You only heard the food being ready and always interrupting the narrative. Thirdly the prices on the vessel were rather pricey oh my God. Lastly I think that it was good for all passagengers especially for kids but I would think they would have kids menu's and kids prices. Please take this criticism seriously and hope it improves the cruise. Really the last thing on my mind is very well welcome that they allowed kids of all ages to to go to the wheel house and engine room. Only thing with the engine room engine running for hours are extremely hot needs to be done before trip so passengers could experience the...
