The South Carolina Welcome Center in Hardeeville is located about 4 miles into the state when heading north along I-95 coming out of Georgia. This welcome center is also known as the Hardeeville Welcome Center. The welcome center is pretty easy to get in and out of as well. My visit here was on August 27, 2022.
When you come in, there is ample parking available here. It wasn't too busy when we got here, but there is also parking available at the back if you don't want to deal with the flow of traffic coming in during busier times.
One of the first things I noticed about this welcome center is that it was newer and updated. Looking at the front from the outside, it looks small, but it's actually bigger than it looks. Before going inside, I checked out the outdoor grounds of the welcome center. I was able to go over to the Welcome to South Carolina sign that you can see while driving north along I-95. The welcome center has a good amount of space to walk around and stretch the legs. Next to the building is the Blue Star Memorial Highway sign too.
After checking out the outdoor grounds, I headed inside the welcome center. Of course, the first thing to do inside was to use the restroom. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. They have definitely been doing a great job at this welcome center. After that, I checked out the inside of the welcome center. They have a desk here that has a charging station if you wanted to charge something while here too, like a phone or tablet. Wi-Fi is also available at this welcome center. The wall pictures around the building inside were nice too, and they really showcase the state. There is another desk here that is staffed from 9 am to 5 pm daily, where you can get lots of information on what the state has to offer. I do want to note that while the welcome center itself is only open from 9 am to 5 pm, the grounds are open 24 hours a day with access to the restrooms from the rear of the building.
Overall, this was a great welcome center. It had been several years since I had come through this state in this direction (2016). Back then, you would have wanted to avoid the welcome center. This is not the case now. The staff were very friendly and helpful. If there was anything you needed to know about the state, they were able to answer it. If your travels take you this way along I-95 North, you should definitely stop and take...
Read moreAs far as rest areas go, this is as good as they get! Drive around to the far end, though, as the front doors are closed during COVID times. All ingres and egress happen through the back door . Those take you directly to the men's and women's bathrooms, which gloriously have the airport style entrances, where you don't open a door, but instead go around a corner so you do not have to touch a public bathroom door handle. Yay! Oh, and there is also a family bathroom with changing station for those with babies/toddlers that need to be changed, or young kids who need a helping hand to use the potty.
There are vending machines (snacks and drinks), maps, and all the usual state welcome center jazz. Everything is pretty modern, clean, and nice. There is a lot of green space to walk your dogs and let them do their business, but I didn't see any poo bags, so you will have to bring your own. There were also benches in case you want to sit back and take in the beautiful freeway traffic (seriously, who uses benches at a highway rest area?!?).
I think there were also picnic tables in case you want to have a rest area picnic...so I guess they are used when parents want to punish their children for misbehaving in the car on the family road trip, because why in God's name would you want to have a rest area picnic?!
While overall this place is tops, I think that the archeologists of the future will draw some really incorrect conclusions about our society when...
Read moreOn my recent road trip through the beautiful state of South Carolina, I had the pleasure of stopping at one of their well-maintained rest stops. From the moment I parked, I was impressed by the cleanliness and order of the facility. The restrooms were spotless and well-stocked, a relief for any traveler.
The outdoor area was a breath of fresh air, literally! It featured picnic tables nestled among well-kept greenery, perfect for stretching your legs and enjoying a quick meal. For families, the rest stop offered a safe and fun play area for children, which was a delightful sight.
What stood out most was the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff. They were more than willing to provide directions and local tips, making my journey even more enjoyable. Additionally, the rest stop had informative brochures and maps, aiding travelers in exploring the best of South Carolina.
In summary, this rest stop was more than just a place to pause; it was a refreshing experience that added value to my road trip. I would highly recommend it to fellow travelers seeking a clean, safe, and welcoming place to take a break. Hats off to South Carolina for setting such a high standard in...
