We visited this restaurant on Sunday night on our way down to from South Carolina. We were traveling to Florida after a very long day and since Highway 95 was backed up with heavy traffic. Upon arrival the hostess/waitress looked at our family of six, but went back to the kitchen. We spent about 5 minutes at the door before she came over to ask how many people we had. She went back to the kitchen and continued to come in and out as she was busy with the 3 tables she had and our table was dirty. During this time, a party of two men came in, walked right by us and sat. He knew the waitress. A few minutes later the rest of his party came in and took the other table next to them. She then proceeded to wait on them and disappear to get them chips and drinks instead of cleaning our table...!! We couldn't believe it. We had waited standing at the door approximately 20 minutes by the time she said the table was ready. We should have left earlier during the wait but we were starving.. I had enough time to analyze and observe that no table was eating anything other than chips. She also never apologized for our wait at the door. After we sat, she and the other waitress continued to go around us, getting refills and chips to the other tables there. I don't understand how they could not at least get us chips as well, knowing how long we'd waited to sit. It's a small restaurant. At this point we got our menus but still no chips or even a drink order. We studied the menu for a few minutes and were ready to order two pizzas to keep it simple and hopefully faster. Yes, this is a Mexican restaurant but they also sell NY style pizza. Another ten minutes went by. No one ever came to the table. At that point we were in absolute disbelief and decided we should leave. My husband is that guy who always wants to be a nice to everyone and never feel uncomfortable. Even he was ready to go. We wasted a half hour at the place and never even got a "sorry for the wait" or water. They really did not care. Before I got married I was a waitress at several restaurants while I got through college. I know the difference between being busy and bad customer service. This place was our worst experience as a family in a very long time, if not ever. For what it's worth, I never got to try the food but the fellow couple to our left got their food after we received our menus, and the man seemed displeased as he moved stuff around with his fork. If you are ever hungry and tempted by the sign on the 95 exit, I hope this review helps you. There are other options on the same road, all likely have better customer service, because the standard here was so low. I don't even think there exists another Mexican restaurant where you haven't at least gotten chips...
Read moreTraveling north and south on Interstate 95 to pick up my camping kids in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, I spent Wednesday and Friday night in Hardeeville, South Carolina. It was the "half-way" point for travel, and I was in no particular rush in either direction.
After checking in at my hotel and making inquiry of decent places to eat, Sarah offered up Mi Tierrita Mexican Food and Pizza - just east of 95 on the north side of the street. I went with the suggestion as - presumably - she knew the area a bit better than me.
Wednesday night it was take out - I ordered the Plato Grande, served with rice beans, a beef taco and a beef tamale at $9.99 along with a Cadillac Margarita at $9.50. After all, Mi Tierrita was advertised as having "The Best Margarita in Town." Grace was my server.
Hardeeville, South Carolina, is just north of the Georgia border at mile marker 5. Several hotels and dining establishments can be found at this exit. Mi Tierrita is about a quarter-mile east of the interstate, on the north side of the street.
Friday night on the return trip with kids, we dined in. I ordered the Taquitos plate, with corn tortillas filled with beef, topped with guacamole, sour cream and Pico de gallo at $9.99, along with a Cadillac Margarita at $9.50. My children ordered tacos and a cheeseburger from the kids menu.
Mexican themed establishment in what appears to be a former fast-food drive in restaurant. Staff were friendly and polite on both occasions. Food was well portioned, competitively priced, and pretty good compared to other Mexican restaurants I've visited. My kids had no complaint.
I thought the Margarita was a bit "pricey," but - I admit - I'm not really sure what this drink would cost at other local establishments. Ordered on the rocks, it was a decent drink.
On both occasions, it was Mexican food for me/us. Branded as Mexican food and "New York Style Pizza," maybe we'll try the pizza and/or subs next time. That means I would stop again at Mi Tierrita Mexican Food and Pizza in Hardeeville, South Carolina.
