This is a nice trail but our experience left much to be desired. The huge storm rains earlier in the month over flowed the western banks of the Susquehanna River which much of the trail borders. This caused enormous overflow eroded the banks considerably and left considerable debris and trash from upriver as well as leaving pools of water over the trail's now very muddy riverside course. Turning Inland away from the river, the trail was quite nice and must be beautiful in the spring. The crowning blow of our hike was that the river was totally shrouded in fog because of the very warm temperatures. My recommendation would be to wait and let the trail dry out a bit unless you're a trail keeper because there's plenty of maintenance, cleanup and trash and recyclables...
Read moreGreat trail, but it is sad to see all the trash and other debris. I have fond memories of going with my grandfather, "Joe K" himself, to tidy up the trail. At the end of the trail, before you loop back, look for an accessory trail that goes up the hill to a rock formation you have to climb, then ring the bell at the very top. Otherwisd, driftwood or storm debris is your signal to loop back / walk back down the way you came (that is what makes it a "loop trail"). Overall it's convenient for amateur hikers and families with small children and is a very walkable trail that hugs the water, and rock climbers will appreciate the separate trail that splits off at the end to hone their...
Read moreThis trail is a great mixture of natural trail and wheelchair/stroller accessible. The trail is set up in a loop. Half of it is either paved or an old railroad siding that has had pea gravel put between the rails and levelled. The other half is levelled grass, or natural trail with roots. There are sections of this portion of the trail can be muddy. So come prepared to get dirty if it rained the night prior.
The natural portion of the trail follows the bank of the Susquahanna. Many different types of birds make their home here. I've seen cranes, ospreys, hawks, and bald eagles, to name a few.
This is one of our favorite places to go in Havre de Grace! You will not be...
