Read moreStunning day at Hapuna! It always has spectacular water. In 2008 on my honeymoon my husband lost his gold band snorkeling along the rocks in the middle of the beach. If anyone finds his band just keep it 😁!! He was so upset that day! I thought it was cute! The one he has now has been through 11 years of happy wedded bliss so maybe that ring had bad juju, who knows! "If it ain't broke don't fix it!"
I hate going to Hapuna in December because it's so crowded, most of the rest of the year it is spectacular. This beach really requires an umbrella for shade. It pains me to see all the tourists developing massive sunburns sitting in the sun. I also hate seeing all the sunscreen being applied polluting the ocean, shade and rash guards work wonders. Umbrellas can be rented and rash guards are not expensive unless you need a designer one to match your swimsuit (I am guilty! Currently in my Tommy Bahama bikini with a cute rash guard to match).
If it's Hapuna you desire and it's windy you have better chance of shelter being close to the rocks on the right. The restrooms are a bit of a trek up the hill no matter what. If it's super windy that means a storm or one of the summer winds, other beaches or a pool can be better. Getting sand blasted while at the beach isn't my idea of a good time.
Spectacular beach! Beautiful location! Mind your ocean awareness and lifeguard warnings. If its crowded try one of the many that aren't...

One of 2 beaches (the other is Mauna Kea Beach) that are free of large rocks and coral and have nice breaks near the shore. There is one large rock in the middle but life guards inform everyone clearly about it.
Surf can be very large. The waves were clean even in the afternoon. Surfline reported 2-3 feet fair to good, but even 30 minutes there were monsters wave faces that reared up well over 12 feet and made the ground shake.
Parking is $5 and can exit and return the same day.
They have a restaurant onsite.
They also rent gear onside for typically $10/item - boogie boards, masks etc. Cash only. The only downside is that they close at 4 pm. (They do take a cash deposit, which to me is much safer than forking over your ID.)
Bathrooms were rated as "3rd world" by some reviews. Personally I've been to Southeast Asia and have seen true "3rd world" bathrooms. Not going into details but these bathrooms are all right for a public beach. The only complaint is there's no changing bench (on the...
