From our week vacation we didn't see one single turtle, until we went here and then they were everywhere. We saw up to 20 of them as we walked all along this beach. They were feeding in the shallow water everywhere. It's a nice beach with a nice historical site on the south end where they also have a protected area to swim and is good for kids. As we walked north, twards the airport direction, there is also more of the bay. As we walked down that way looking at all the turtles along the way we were met by a local who was casting his hand net for fishing and he informed us to be careful because there were a couple of sharks in the bay at that end and it was why he quit fishing. Not that I'm a shark expert or anything, but it looked like a natural spot for them to cruise through on a regular basis. But the south end looked safe and is specifically designed for swimming. We were very happy we found this place on...
Read moreA very beautiful spot and an amazing experience to see these turtles in the wild. Respect them and give them their space so we can continue to access this spot, if you don't the ranger will definitely remind you. The beach and view is just breathtaking. Very glad we chose this spot for seeing our first wild turtles. Harbour House restaurant is nearby(about 1/2 mile from beach). Fish and chips and Hawaiian beer to end the day. Would be nice to have a small level path for ADA access, although I do understand keeping the site as undeveloped as possible. It was a little challenging for my mother who has a walker but fortunately she was a trooper and made the walk out there. She needed assistance over some of the larger lava speed bumps in the path and occasionally resting and water breaks. But very glad she was able to make it and it will be one of the highlights...
Read moreBeautiful, quiet beach. 100% will see sea turtles feeding by the rocks. Beautiful sunset views. You can either park at the national park visitor center to learn some history and visit the little gift shop, walk about 1.3 mile to the beach. Or park at the Honokohau Harbor. The parking lot to the national park closes at 5 pm so we opted to park at the harbor to enjoy the sunset. Please stay at least 20 ft away from sea turtles. We saw a few tourists getting too close to them. Maybe put up a sign in different languages so everyone can heed the warning? Or have volunteers stationed at this beach to...
