Had an awesome time out on the Ocean Blue Kona with Captain Kevin and Mahina! Tasha made the booking process very easy and conversational. (She also made some killer sour dough bread for our sandwich lunch). Our party of six (two adults and four teenagers) hopped aboard and after a quick safety tutorial we headed out of the harbor. We were immediately greeted by a small pod of spinner dolphins which we enjoyed for a bit. Kevin didn’t rush us at all, which we appreciated, and waited until we wanted to troll down to our snorkeling spot. The surf was a little rough at the usual more private snorkeling spot, so he recommended we head to Keakekua Bay instead. Mahina gave us a nice history lesson of the area as well as safety instructions to keep us and the wildlife safe. We were able to snorkel at our own pace and saw plenty of tropical reef fish and beautiful coral. We hopped back aboard ready to eat some lunch and head out fishing. My daughter spotted a Manta Ray as we were getting ready to leave, so a couple of kids opted to hop back in the ocean to check them out snorkeling from a respectful distance. Lunch was great with the aforementioned sour dough bread sandwiches, chips, fruit, etc. As we trolled out to one of Kevin’s bottom fishing spots, he spotted some plastic debris carried by the oven currents which Mahina netted to do our part to clean up the ocean, which speaks to their character and impressed us. We were rewarded with a boost to our pono by seeing some hammerhead sharks circling around which we observed for awhile, which was really cool! After seeing some flying fish we made our way to the fishing spot. Less than 10 seconds after dropping my llne I hooked a decent sized goat fish which fought well and took some effort to bring up to the boat. All four of us fishing fought a variety of fish including a nice Nabeta. We moved on to another fishing spot for some different variety and landed a few Amber Jack which we released. The whole day was relaxing and more like a day out with good friends than a charter. I wasn’t quite sure how the day would go with some in our group more interested in fishing, some with more interested in snorkeling and some just wanted to see some sights and catch some sun rays on the deck. Everything worked out perfectly and everyone had a great day, which was no mistake I’m sure, but rather excellent behind the scenes planning and experience of the crew. We left with some awesome fillets and gutted whole fish along with some recipes! Thanks again to Ocean Blue Kona for a...
Read moreOcean Blue Kona was a fantastic part of our vacation to the big island. The boat takes a maximum of 6 but we were fortunate to be the only 4 on the boat that day. If you have less than 6 it definitely is worth looking at chartering the boat because you feel like you are in the lap of luxury when it's just your group on the boat. The boat trip was full of little extras that added up for a great experience. We met our super friendly captain and guide at the marina and were presented with sweet long sleeve water shirts. We got on the boat to a nice continetal breakfast. We relaxed on our voyage to the snorkel site. At the snorkel site we were presented with two GoPro cameras that we could use to take pictures and videos and we got to keep both SD cards. The snorkel location was way too busy the day we went. It would have been nice if maybe a second more quiet snorkel site was included in the tour. After snorkeling we moved to a different part of the bay where we were given high quality sandwiches and snacks for lunch and we got to watch the spinner dolphins as they swam around our boat. It was a highlight for the family. The captain took his time going back to the marina and we stopped to look at some cool geological formations along the way. As we neared the marina we got some extra chocolate treats that really hit the spot and were presented with a cool lavender towel to wipe our faces which was unexpectedly very refreshing and a perfect way to end our morning. Just being on the boat and touring around was enough even if you don’t want to snorkel. A big thanks to Captain Danny and Sarah for a fantastic morning on the water in Kona. It was our last day on the big island and a great way to end the trip. Danny is also a great communicator as we had to move things around. He made sure we were aware of what was going on while we tried to reschedule. If you want to feel special and have a relaxing boat tour of the waters around Kona, all for good value, you must choose...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of going on a boat tour with Ocean Blue Charters Kona, and it was nothing short of incredible! My three girlfriends and I spent a fun, safe, and thrilling day on the water with Captain Kevin and deckhand Mahina, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience.
From the moment we stepped on board, Captain Kevin and Mahina made us feel completely at ease. They were not only professional and safety-conscious but also super knowledgeable about the local area and marine life. Their passion for what they do truly shines through, and it made our day so much more special.
The highlight of the trip was definitely fishing. None of us had ever caught a fish before, but Captain Kevin made sure that changed! He guided us every step of the way, and soon we were all reeling in fish like pros. It was such an exciting experience, and we’ll never forget it! We even took the fish home and made homemade fresh poke with their recommended recipe!
We also got to snorkel in a breathtaking cove near the Captain Cook monument. The water was crystal clear, and Mahina told us about all the hidden gems of the area. They took us to all the fun nooks and crannies, ensuring our adventure was as fun and action-packed as it was memorable.
I can’t recommend Ocean Blue Charters Kona enough! Whether you’re a seasoned boater or a complete newbie like we were, you’re sure to walk away feeling like an expert fisherman and with a deep appreciation for the local lore. Thank you, Captain Kevin and Mahina, for an unforgettable day...
