Terrible first time experience!!! After a long morning of soccer for my kids, we decided to try and cool off at High Point City Lake Pool in High Point, NC. We arrive at the pool at approximately 3:40pm. Upon arrival, the (first) rude employee at the check in window pointed to a sign and stated “read the sign make sure you understand it” and turned away. FIRST RED FLAG! The sign stated “no refunds, Rain Check at the supervisors discretion by request only.” O..k… my family and I only planned to spend a couple hours in the pool anyway because it’s already been a long day. The rude worker then turns back and says “where do you live?” Again, this was my first time at this pool so I didn’t understand why he was asking, but my response was, “High Point.” He then proceeded to ask “do you have an ID, utility bill, or anything??” My response, “At the pool??? No I don’t.” At this point, I’m assuming this is a pricing conversation… so my response was “I don’t care how much it cost, it’s not an issue.” Ok, so I pay full price for me and my 3 babies and go inside. By this time, it’s 3:45pm. We’re already dressed for the pool, so no time lost there… at exactly 3:50pm the lifeguards blow their whistles and says pool break! Ok, again, no issue… everyone gets out of the pool and waits exactly 10 mins. Whistles are blown again to resume play. At approximately 4:06pm you here ONE rumble of thunder. Whistles are blown again for everyone to get out of the pool due to thunder…. At this point, my babies starts to cry because they don’t understand why they just can’t play! I over hear a lifeguard say, we are going to stay out of the pool due to a possible storm. I then check google for the forecast, it says a storm will begin from then until the next 2 hours. TWO HOURS????! So after only about 15 minutes in the pool and paying FULL PRICE, I remember the “Rain check sign” in the check in window. I ask the (rude attendant) upon leaving for a rain check voucher, he blatantly said “we don’t give refunds.” I said, that’s fine because I am not asking for a refund, just a rain check for possibly tomorrow? He said my manager said no rain checks. Now I’m livid! Because what?! I literally JUST paid YOU directly, 15 minutes ago, your lifeguards are keeping everyone outta the pool for at least 2 hours, the sign says rain checks are possible, and you are going to tell me that you all are not giving me a rain check at my request?! I ask to speak with the manager immediately! Some young guy comes to the window who is obviously NOT the manager because he had no clue as to what he was talking about. I then ask for the Corporate number because this is ridiculous! The young guy says they don’t have a corporate number, but called “someone else that came from the back.” He then says “yea it sucks but weren’t not giving refunds or rain checks. You can have my managers email but there’s no phone number.” Needless to say, I will NEVER return to this money hungry establishment, where the bathrooms are disgusting, the workers are amateurs and lack professionalism. I will be leaving as many negative reviews and reaching out to the Better Business Bureau as well, on behalf of every consumer to help make them aware of the type of unfair practice this facility is...
Read moreBeen coming here for years. Great park and they take care of it. Taught my youngest how to fish here this weekend for the first time. Bank fished on Saturday, and rented a boat and trolling motor on Sunday morning.
Had a wonderful and memorable time.
2024 UPDATE #2 - (back to 5 stars!)
After having some bad experiences here, taking a break from the lake for a month or 2, an email to the Parks and Rec HQ, and leaving a scathing review, I've since returned to City Lake Park just to see how the fishing is, and to see if anything I said made a difference.
Well, turns out they do check out these reviews (as well as Wildlife Resources). I honestly didn't think they paid attention. So, I was a little embarrassed when the young lady who normally signs me in for my boat launch started citing things from my review! While that did put me on the spot, I'm really glad they listened.
I was informed that a lot will be changing. Wildlife Resources is way more active in the lake area than they were before; it was really needed. There's a lot of boat traffic there and not just for fishing. They're going to do their best to post signage for the dock area to reduce any safety issues, and they told me what I could do to help out being a yearly paying customer.
I stated before that I was not going to renew my season launch pass. But given these changes, and seeing that things have turned around for the better, I WILL be renewing once again this year. While it was immature of me to post a review like I did, and not say something to the staff, whom I know very well, I know how to handle things going forward.
The staff is empowered, and Wildlife Resources for the park is fully staffed to handle any issues. I'm really glad they listened. That place is really my 2nd home on the weekends at times. As for the fishing, well, thats still the same; good on some days, not so good on other days.
Thank you City Lake Park staff! And I'm sorry if I made...
Read moreMy experience was entirely enjoyable for both myself and my 10 year-old son.
Lovely natural setting, great views, easily accessible location, clean and well maintained, watercraft rental, dock access, large playground area with various types of swings/slides/etc in a fenced and easily monitored location, large variety of native wildlife and waterfowl in abundance, small/cute rail-mounted train/tram for the children (& their parents) to ride upon and leisurely tour the better part of the public-accessible areas, picnic and bench areas abound (*both covered and open-setting picnic locations), walking trails, personal watercraft loading/unloading, mini-golf, food and beverage concessions for purchase, and a host of additional features, attractions, and amenities as well.
Excellent swimming & waterpark features are present but currently unavailable for access/use due to ongoing maintenance, upgrades, & additions. Said construction and clean up is expected to be finished by the end of the summer of 2022, and are further expected to return to full operation the following summer (*2023).
There will also be a community/conference center & meeting hall available for reservation & patron utilization when aforementioned retrofitting is finally completed and reopened to the public (*again, forecast for finalization by the conclusion of the current summer season of 2022).
Excellent place to spend some (*relatively - but, these days, isn't everything?) safe and wholesome time with the family or as a solo guest.
Usually not too crowded to be wholly enjoyed.
Pet friendly.
No entrance fee.
Limited restroom availability (*at least, based on this reviewer's own personal experience), but facilities are available to the visiting guests and are, in general, kept in an overall clean & well-maintained condition.
Entirely and enthusiastically...
