Called a few dive shops on Oahu for a Discover Scuba dive for my two sons. My wife and I are both experienced divers and immediately felt comfortable with Big Kahuna. So glad we picked them! Better than we expected and they set a new benchmark for us as far as safety and customer service. Greg was great and we enjoyed our two tank dives. We didn't go far offshore and they knew their dive sites inside and out. Never a guarantee on what you see, but we spotted a shark, turtles, and an octopus. Plenty of fish and coral.
My two sons were ecstatic after the dives and snorkeling is now their second favorite water activity. If you are looking to take anyone young or old on a Discover dive, look no further. I recommend Big Kahuna and would be happy to dive with them again. I have photos like the other reviews, but they are not on my phone right now. The other photos in the reviews are accurate in what to expect.
And as a bonus, the marina we launched from had easy and free parking, good restaurants nearby, and it did not take long to get to the dive sites.
I’m a certified diver with an interest in getting my family into diving (can’t have enough dive buddies). I’ve taken my parents and two kids on multiple Discover Scuba Diving classes in Palau. I took another one of my children years ago on a Discover Scuba Diving Class in Honolulu. These experiences were memorable and positive. Last week, I took four of my kids on a Discover Scuba with Big Kahuna Watersports. Hands down – these guys provided the greatest Discover Scuba Diving experience. They are very safety conscious and worked with our group during the in-class training to cover important points. After a short video – they explained to-do’s and not to-do’s and explained why. There was back and forth discussions and they kept it interesting. On the boat they relaxed those who were nervous. We had a two-tank dive – saw lots of coral, fish and sea turtles. Everyone fully enjoyed the experience. After the second dive – they sent pictures they had taken in the boat and on the dive – at no cost. They spent time to provide a text of good restaurants and activities around their shop plus they provided paperwork which counts for an open water dive if they chose to become certified. On a scale of 1 to 10 – I would rate them a perfect 10. They have the special sauce. I highly recommend Greg and his team. Very special group of people who have put together a...
Read moreMy wife and I took our two oldest daughters to do a "discover scuba" day and Greg knocked it out of the park! A couple of things that I'd like to highlight, first is Greg himself. He was lighthearted, understanding, and incredibly patient during the whole trip. As I said, this was my daughter's first time in open water and not once was there any sense of rushing or making them feel bad. My daughters loved that he had a 'Barbie' figure to explain many of the concepts to them too! One thing that drew me to Big Kahuna is getting to dive off of a boat vs a shore dive like a lot of other operators do. Not saying there's not good shore diving, but my experience is you typically get better experiences going a bit offshore. It does cost a little bit more money than some other shore operators but I think it's well worth the extra cost. Our first dive was over an area with a bit more sand which helped our daughters better learn to manage their buoyancy, our second dive was spent almost exclusively over a reef where we saw a lot of cool wildlife (tons of turtles, 8' spotted eagle ray, countless colorful fish, etc.). I'd highly recommend Big Kahuna, it's an ideal dive shop that's not going to focus on you and not take you out in a massive boat with two dozen other people. If we're ever back in Oahu, we'll...
