Icy Strait is a small, quiet little port that the Cruise Ships added after the Skagway Port was temp closed due to rock slide activity had damaged the Pier. There is a small cannery museum, gift shop, coffee house, restaurants and a short walk to the Tlinglit Village of Hoonah. We decided to explore the Alaska Wilderness and pre-booked a shore excursion through our Holland America Cruise Ship. $110 Per Person. After you disembark, there is a green Gondola which is complimentary and will take you to the next "level". From there, we gathered our tickets for the next super steep ride up the mountain on the Red Gondola. WooHoo! What an amazing ride. If you are skittish of heights, DO NOT look down! It's a spectacular view of the Port and all of the surrounding water and Islands. Once on top of the mountain, we were warmly greeted by several Tour Guides and were told to wait for the next Tram. There are bathrooms and a concession stand but, this is the wilderness so, not much else. "I wanted to extend our thanks to our incredible Tour Guide (Apologies, I can't remember his name but, he was the Guide who was taking Sunday Classes) for your deep knowledge of the Native Tlingit culture and the intricate details of the forest area were truly enlightening. Your passion and expertise made the experience both educational and memorable. I appreciate the effort you put into sharing such rich information and making the tour so engaging. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!" The ride back down the mountain is not as scary but, just as amazing. Once back to the 1st level, you can take the Green Gondola back to the Pier location. The Hubby and I choose to walk the path along the shoreline back to our Ship and saw some incredible foliage. As we walked along the Pier, we saw effervescent sea stars below the waters surface attached to rocks! Who knew that sea starts flourish in Alaska? BTW, you can book a Zip Line excursion at Icy Strait. I was too chicken, it's a...
Read moreThe group intentionally misguided us, saying once you take the trip up, we will be able to take the nature trail we had around 2 hours, they couldn't manage the staff/security, who was supposed to come with group along the trail, but the guy left said he had been working since morning, since there was no staff, the trail is closed, the guy at the counter knows all this. After coming back we even talked to Ronin, who is the manager and explained all this and asked for refund. He denied our request and trip is only for ride and the nature trail is free. The only access to the trial is you need a gondola ride, also why the hell you advertise about the nature trail when it is not included, the counter is full of posters about the trail. Later we found out from other guests in the cruise, this happened to them previously too. This is consistent cheating in my opinion! I have the email and receipts for 8 people, we paid $404.27...
Read moreThis is a smooth, high-speed tram that takes you 1600 feet up to the top of the mountain in seven minutes. People riding the Zip Rider zipline will take this Skyglider Gondola to the top of the mountain to start their zipline ride. If you're not doing the zipline, you can pay a price and ride the Skyglider Gondola as many times as you like. The view from the top of the mountain is spectacular. There are more attractions that will be built at the top of the peak, but for the moment there's a tram and a walking trail called the Hidden Lake Loop Trail. The trail takes you to Hidden Lake and then back, but a tour guide is required (in case you encounter a bear) to escort you. The service is free (you can give him a tip, but he won't ask or...
