During our stop at Icy Strait Point aboard Radiance of the Seas, my wife and I had the pleasure of dining at The Cookhouse—and it was easily one of the best meals we’ve had during our trip. After a casual 20-30 minute walk from the ship, we arrived at this charming spot, passing by some interesting historical attractions along the way. The walk itself added to the experience, giving us a real sense of the local history and beauty before even sitting down to eat.
Now, let’s talk about the food—starting with the halibut fish and chips I ordered, which was hands down some of the best I’ve ever had. And I’ve had fish and chips in London, so that’s saying something! The halibut was fresh, flaky, and cooked to perfection with a crisp, golden batter that wasn’t too heavy. My wife opted for the cod fish and chips, and she couldn’t stop raving about how delicious and perfectly seasoned it was. Both meals were served piping hot and with just the right amount of crunch on the fries.
One surprise highlight was the reindeer chili—something you don’t see every day. If you’ve never had it, I highly recommend giving it a try. Where else can you get reindeer chili? It was hearty, flavorful, and had just the right amount of spice. Definitely something unique that added to the authentic Alaskan experience.
The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. With its casual vibe and high-quality food, The Cookhouse definitely stands out as a must-visit spot in Icy Strait.
Whether you're a seafood lover or just looking for a unique Alaskan dish, I’d highly recommend The Cookhouse. It’s not just a meal; it’s part of the Icy Strait experience and well...

The food was served piping hot, fresh, and very flavorful, with quick preparation and attentive service. The atmosphere is definitely a highlight, located right on the ocean with both indoor seating and a covered outdoor area that’s especially enjoyable when the weather cooperates. It’s a beautiful spot to sit back, relax, and take in the views. One drawback is that the menu did not list any prices, which made the final bill a bit of a surprise. The meals are quite expensive, though that’s not unexpected in a remote, touristy spot like Hoonah. Overall, a great place to enjoy a tasty meal in a scenic setting, just be prepared for...
Read moreDiners should be aware that the seafood feast is like an East Coast Seafood Boil. The local shrimp, crab, corn on the cob, russet potatoes, and other goodies are boiled together. This was a problem for those with allergies. However, other guests were very pleased with the freshness and vibrant flavor of the Icy Strait shellfish. The Cookhouse staff went to the trouble of preparing a huge serving of shrimp for me, which was delightful. Beverages are limited. The restaurant staff are hospitable and thoughtful, just like everyone working at Icy...
