I'm here visiting from out of town. When I went there last evening, I was not impressed with the friendliness of the congregation. No one even said hello. The same occurred this morning, except for one person after we were done with services. However that all changed when I went back this afternoon to the kollel minyan for Mincha. This was the friendliest reception I've had in a long time, traveling around the country. The members of the kollel that I spoke with took an interest in me as a person, invited me to the night sedar of learning, and even offered me the ammod for my father's yhartzeit. During that time, my then-husband would use intimidation and force to control me, at one point locking me in my own home. At the time, I was a new mother and completely alone in a new community and new state.
I spoke with Rabbi Nagel privately about my situation. He laughed at me. He told me to not “air my grievances”, amongst many other things. During the gett, he appeared compassionate towards me in front of the witnesses. In private conversation, I never felt so belittled, minimized, and humiliated before.
