Jeffrey Open Space Trail is something to treasure for those lucky enough to live nearby. You'll find beautifully landscaped, mostly concrete bike/pedestrian trails in a park-like setting just off and along Jeffrey Road, stretching from Quail Hill in the South, all the way to Portola Parkway, in the North.
You can indulge in as much, or as little exercise as you want, while being treated to lovely scenery, nature, large manicured lawns and sturdy benches set out for you, whenever you want to take a rest. These trails are fantastic for walking your pooch too!
I once got into an epic squirt gun battle with my grand kids on a huge grass lawn near the Woodbury part of the trail. Lawn was so large and plush, you didn't have to worry about bothering others, or hurting yourself, if you fell.
I've seen all sorts of birds on the Jeffrey Open Space Trail, including White-Tailed Kites, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Terns, Snowy Egrets, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Bullock's Orioles, Western Blue Birds, Chestnut Mannikins, House Finches, Say's Phoebe, Black Phoebe, Crows, Red-Tailed Hawks, and tons of hummingbirds, too. It's a pretty great place to bird watch, since all the mature trees they've planted over the last five years or so, give all these birds a nice habitat to hang out in. There are also lots of drought tolerant flowering plants to look at, as well as a mini orange grove. Plaques set in the concrete trail, and on decorative walls provide nice information on the history of the city of Irvine. Large bridges rise over cross streets too, so you won't have to bother with street traffic, when you're biking.
There is a large tunnel with handsome block work near Woodbury, that is also a nice feature on the Open Space Trail. My wife and I used to go to Panera in Woodbury Town Center first thing in the morning, for a coffee and a goody, then walk the Jeffrey Open Space Trail not far from there, to enjoy the beauty of this area. Picturesque and seemingly never-ending trails to walk,...
Read moreAs a family we did the John Wayne cancer walk this weekend. Weather was perfect. Trail was perfect! The only thing we noticed that there is no speed limit or signs for cyclists on the trail. Most of them were traveling at excessive speed, even though they saw there were people walking. Several close calls for being hit by cyclist who didn't bother slowing down. Other people on trail express the same concern. Cyclist are going way too fast on trail. We need to remember these are families walking on the trail at times with small children. They should slow down when they come near people and call out on your right. Or on your left. Like most other...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite bike trails to visit with my family. It's not too long or too short and good for both bike & e-scooter riding. We park at the Cypress Community Park, get on the short but still-nice Cypress Village trail, turn around at the end, and ride through Jeffrey Open Space trail until we reach the end at Portola parkway. The roundtrip is about 9 miles, good for my 5-yo daughter who's on a 16" mountain bike.
There are multiple restrooms along the route and the place is peaceful, very green, and refreshing.
It's also a great place to walk through dogs and...
