I’ve been playing guitar and writing music for most of my life and have tried working on my voice before. In high school, I was in Chorus and Select Chorus and was a lead singer in a band, but never thought too highly of my voice, and focused more on guitar. I tried a few singing lessons after college and never saw the benefit or any significant improvement and continued to shy away from singing. I always thought the people who could sing were all just gifted with certain ranges or abilities, unlike guitar where I could put in hours of deliberate practice and get better. I decided that wasn’t true and was hard at work for 2 years trying to improve my voice on my own looking up videos and watching recorded lessons online like 30 Day Singer etc. I was hesitant to take lessons one on one as I thought I could go it alone. I was improving, but still not to the point I wanted to get to. There were notes I just figured I would never be able to hit and assumed I was just gonna be a guitar focused musician for life. That is until I met Brian Wiseman. I had heard one of his students singing at an Open Mic and had to find out where he was taking lessons. In a week a booked myself a 30 minute consult with Brian. In that 30 minutes I learned more than in the prior 2 years of trying to teach myself. I IMMEDIATELY saw improvement in my ability to sing higher and in a tone that I’ve always been working towards and breath in a way where I don’t run out of air. Brian is able to listen and instruct in a way that makes it easy to improve. Oh! And he is the nicest and most supportive person to have as a teacher! He will be your biggest fan and bring energy into the lesson that will keep you coming back for more. I have only been taking lessons with him for 6 weeks now and my range is improving like I never thought it would (I could only really hit E4 chest voice comfortably previously and then go falsetto, now I am working on an A4 with chest voice! And still improving to work up to a C5 with chest voice! - it’s gonna take time, but I think I can do it!). I am so excited to continue taking lessons for months and years to come and see how much I can improve my voice. I’m coming for you Freddy! If you want to see my progression over the years and how I continue to improve I’m @brettdoespt on IG. Follow if you want, but if you want to improve your voice, go take lessons with Brian! Now!...
Read moreIt's hard to articulate the impact that TWVS had on me, especially in the last year. When I moved to US in April 2019, one of my goals was to work on my voice, and I was very lucky to find Tim online and chat with him. My first class was with Emily (and I have had 100s of classes since!!), who told me exactly what I needed to hear and reinstalled confidence and passion in my own voice. There is a freedom in all the sessions to be exactly what you want to me while still growing, which is one of the best things in the world, and Emily is literally one of the best teachers one can ask for. Slowly, it became an intrinsic part of my life.
One of the most beautiful part of TWVS is that is feels like family. The first adult singing party that I had attended, people told me that they knew Tim and were training with him for upwards of 5 or even 10 years. It felt strange that educational relationships can last that long, but I have really realized what it is!! It's therapy!! Emily with her very warm and fiery creativity and Brian, with his calm and unique musicality, are wonderful mentors and great friends; and if that's something one desires in a teacher (I am sure I did), then TWVS is the place to be.
During the pandemic, while the world shut down, another aspect of family opened up. A family that was realized in other students of TWVS, who were equally hungry to sing and connect and live through their music. Our biweekly and often weekly potpourri of musical styles, voices, support and connection made the pandemic more sane for me.
I would recommend TWVS to anyone who wants to learn, not only music, but musicality and confidence, and have an entirely new support system in their life...
Read moreI found this place on a flyer by the park near my house. Something told me to grab one and try it out. It was the best decision I ever made. They worked with me during the pandemic and being that I am public school teacher in NYC, they were able to work around my schedule and budget. The teachers and the atmosphere are very healthy. There’s this mutual understanding of safety, communication and comfort in the community. Something that I know my colleagues and I try to instill when we teach our students about community. All the teachers there are thoughtful, kind and compassionate. I’ve worked closely with one, Emily, and she is super supportive. I can tell she is here to help. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with Helena and she was also super supportive. The recitals are so much fun. I relate a lot of this to my own practices as a teacher. So I think it’s super important to have a goal to show off your growth and skills. The recitals are that opportunity to show the TWVS singing community how far you’ve grown and for the community to show it’s support to you, the singer. It has been a continuous pleasure attending...
